Holders Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club returned to winning ways in the Bangladesh Premier League with a vital 1-0 victory over hosts Chittagong Abahani as the top-flight football returned to MA Aziz Stadium in Chittagong on Friday.
Following a barren opening half, Gambian midfielder Landing Darboe netted the all-important goal in the 63rd minute and it was enough for the reigning champions to salvage three vital points against the rising league powerhouse.
When the two sides met in the first phase, it ended in a goalless draw.
The defeat dented Chittagong Abahani's position at the top of the points table. The port city outfit remained at second position with 28 points from 15 matches, four behind Abahani Limited, who have a game in hand.
After losing against Rahmatganj MFS in the last game at Rafiq Uddin Bhuiyan Stadium in Mymensingh, the Dhanmondi-based club, on the other hand, closed the gap to three points with Chittagong Abahani to move to third place. The reigning champions and Rahmatganj now have the same number of points but the former are third with a better goal difference.
Meanwhile in the day's second match at the same venue, Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra registered their fourth league win after beating Feni Soccer Club comfortably 3-1 to climb two places up to eighth spot.
Sheikh Russel now have 15 points from 14 matches while Soccer Club, who are winless for eight matches now, moved to the bottom of the standings with only 10 points from the same number of outings.
Jean Jules Ikanga's header and Rummon Hossain's brace in the late stages of the game ensured three crucial points for the Blues. Helal had earlier given Soccer Club the lead in the 64th minute.
