Abahani Limited moved four points clear of their namesake Chittagong Abahani at the top of the Bangladesh Premier League points table after beating Team BJMC 2-1 at Rafiq Uddin Bhuiyan Stadium in Mymensingh on Sunday.
Substitute striker Wahed Ahmed's late strike meant the Sky Blues registered their fifth straight league victory, which is their longest winning run this season. With eight more rounds to go, the Federation Cup champions are in a comfortable position at the top of the standings with 32 points from 14 matches.
Abahani's nearest rivals Chittagong Abahani and Rahmatganj MFS have 28 and 25 points respectively. Team BJMC, on the other hand, remained at eighth place with 14 points from the same number of outings.
George Kottan's side dominated the opening half but failed to break the deadlock and had to wait till the 56th minute of the game to take the lead and it was none other than the in-form Nigerian striker Sunday Chizoba. Sunday dribbled past an opponent defender in the right side of the box to slot home past BJMC goalkeeper Palash.
BJMC scripted a quick response as Samson Iliasu cancelled out the lead 10 minutes later from a penalty after Abahani's Ghanaian defender Samad Yussif was penalised for a handball in the goal-line. Wahed then came off the bench to net the winner in the 83rd minute with a shot from a goal-mouth scramble after Jewel Rana's initial effort was blocked.
Abahani, the four-time professional league champions, are still the only side in the league who are unbeaten. It was Sunday's 15th league goal this season and he remains at the summit of the top-scorers' list.
