Chittagong Abahani at the BPL summit
Chittagong Abahani returned to the top of the Bangladesh Premier League points table while Dhaka namesake Abahani moved to second place after the two sides registered comfortable victories in their respective 10th round matches at Bangabandhu National Stadium on Saturday. The Chittagong outfit found it relatively easy in their 3-1 win over Muktijoddha Sangsad, riding on national winger Zahid Hossain's first brace in the league this season. Four-time professional league champions Abahani also outplayed Uttar Baridhara by the same scoreline to stay only a point behind the leaders, thanks to a brace from Nigerian striker Sunday Chizoba. In the day's opening game, Zahid gave Chittagong Abahani the lead with only two minutes into the clock, taking a shot from 20 yards following a Kaushik Barua pass that deflected off a defender before entering the net. In the 24th minute, Mohammad Ibrahim broke into the left side of the penalty area before unleashing a strike that hit the top of the woodwork. Nigerian striker Ahmed Kolo Musa equalised the margin six minutes into the second half with an easy finish on a rebounder inside the six-yard box after defender Saidul Haque's initial effort hit the crossbar. Zahid put Chittagong Abahani ahead again in the 59th minute, placing home nicely from a low Mamunul Islam free-kick. Leonel Saint Preux sealed victory in injury time with a solo effort. Entering the penalty area, the Haitian striker rounded off Muktijoddha goalkeeper Mamun Khan before slotting home into an empty net. Meanwhile, it was Chizoba who stole the show in the day's second game as the traditional Sky Blues dominated thoroughly against the newly-promoted side, who slumped to their ninth straight defeat. Chizoba looked dangerous from the beginning and his quick-play with English playmaker Lee Andrew Tuck caused havoc continuously in the opponents' terrain. The Nigerian took the lead for Abahani at the quarter-hour mark with a cool finish. In the 28th minute, Uttar Baridhara custodian Ershad made a decent save to deny Jewel Rana's shot at the near post after the national winger exchanged passes with Lee inside the box. Sunday doubled the lead in the 37th minute after a blunder from the Uttar Baridhara netminder. A Lee free-kick met an unmarked Sunday at the far post but Ershad failed to grip the Nigerian's header as Chizoba smashed home in the second attempt. It was Chizoba's eighth goal in the league this season. He is now the second highest goal-scorer. Lee made it 3-0 in the 71st minute before Faisal pulled one back for the opposition in injury time.
