Bangladesh ace all-rounder Shakib al Hasan said he has found the focus that was needed to get him some runs. Shakib on Sunday produced a match winning 96 not out to help Bangladesh fetch a three-wicket win against hosts Zimbabwe at Harare Sports Club. With the win Bangladesh bagged another 10 points in the ICC Men’s World Cup Super League and also secured the three-match series win against the African nation with a game to spare.

Shakib’s match winning knock has come amid the left-handed batsman struggling with the willow. Shakib since his return to international cricket in January this year, having completed the ban imposed by the International Cricket Council for failing to report corrupt approach, has been dealing with below par form with the willow.

He has been sharp with the ball and was key to Bangladesh’s 155-run win in the first ODI of the series against Zimbabwe on Friday but there was concern about his performance with the bat.

Shakib in his 12 international innings across format, since return, scored only two half centuries before the game against Zimbabwe on Sunday. 68 runs in the first innings against West Indies in Chattogram Test in February this year was his best during that period.

But as it happened, Shakib in the second ODI against Zimbabwe broke the shackles to pull Bangladesh out of a batting failure chasing 241 runs. The left-handed batsman found Mohammad Saifuddin to produce an unbeaten 69-run stand for the eighth wicket. Shakib earlier also partnered with Mahmudullah for a 55-run stand for the fifth wicket during the chase.

“You always have to work hard to perform. Important is to have the right mindset. I feel that I was thinking too much [before this game] which I tried to change. Few things have helped me to keep focus ahead of this game and I will try to hold on to those. Having played international cricket for so long, you do not have big technical problems but it is all in the mindset. So if I can win the mental game with myself I can score runs regularly,” said Shakib to the media following the game.

Shakib comparing to his contribution with the ball in the first ODI series to the contribution with the bat in the second game said, “The innings [on Sunday] was important because it was needed for the team to win. So I am very happy in that sense. Both [performance with the ball on Friday] have its own value. I always try to contribute for the team. I am happy to have been able to contribute on both the days.”

Shakib informed the wicket was tough to bat on but credited Saifuddin for the way he remained till the end to finish the chase. The right-handed batsman batting at number eight remained unbeaten on a 34-ball 28.

“The wicket was different today [Sunday]. The ball was not coming to the bat well so you had to play your shots to score runs. So I had to make some adjustment as a batsman. I am happy for having been able to do that. Took my time in the in middle but there were wickets falling on the other end so I did not have much to do. Credit must be given to Saifuddin for the way he has been able to finish the game with me,” said Shakib.

“I was speaking the same with Afif [Hossain] too which is if we can bat till the 45th over, then we can see where we are at. It is possible to score 15, 20 or 30 runs in two three overs in one day cricket now. So the target was simply to close the game. We never thought of chasing it quick. We know that run-a-ball in one day cricket is very possible nowadays,” the Bangladesh star cricketer added.
