Tamim on June 25 had traveled to London for treatment after complaining of severe intestinal pain.

Bangladesh ODI captain Tamim Iqbal will be in self-quarantine as the second phase of individual practice sessions of the national team cricketer is set to start on Saturday at different Bangladesh Cricket Board [BCB] facilities across the country. Tamim returned to Dhaka from London on Saturday following a health check-up and has been asked by the immigration department to maintain self-quarantine for two weeks, till August 14.

Tamim on June 25 had traveled to London for treatment after complaining of severe intestinal pain.

“I had a small discussion with Tamim after he returned. I am still to look into his report and know of the details. He has been put in self-quarantine imposed by the government,” said BC chief physician Dr Debashish Chowdhury to Dhaka Tribune on Monday.

The individual practice sessions is being expected to see an increase in number of participating cricketers said Debashish. Following the successful completion of practice sessions last months, under special arrangement of BCB amid the threat of Covid-19 pandemic, more cricketers have now gained confidence to set foot on the field.

There is also a strong indication of Bangladesh national team and BCB high-performance sides likely to tour Sri Lanka in October and that the cricketers would like to get the rust off having stayed at home for over four months. BCB had suspended all cricket activities in the county in March due to Covid-19 pandemic.

“It is [starting on Saturday] going to be individual practice sessions like we had last month. But we are expecting more participation of cricketers. The setup will be the same like it was in the first phase but with increase in number of cricketers we will have to increase our support staffs and also follow the measures more strictly,” Debashish explained.

With Bangladesh likely to return to international cricket, discussion in the fraternity is high of getting started with full team practice sessions. But that would require more work at the back-end with a totally different setup and logistical measures, informed Debashish.

“We will have to come with totally a different plan and setup if we look to start team practice sessions. We will have to create a bio-bubble, take the squad into isolation keeping them in a hotel with other logistical supports,” said Debashish.

“That will be a different level of operation to look into. Doing that right away with the likely tour of Sri Lanka in October will mean the cricketers will have to be kept away from home for almost three months. That will not be wise as far as the mental health is concerned,” the BCB physician added.

Considering the challenges, it is understood by Dhaka Tribune that the national setup will not practice sessions in Dhaka at all. The team is likely to gather only before leaving the country and have their first practice session as an unit in Sri Lanka.

Apart from the three-match Test series, Bangladesh are likely to play a T20I series in Sri Lanka. BCB chairman of cricket operation Akram Khan informed discussion with Sri Lanka Cricket is tsking place frequently.

“Discussion between BCB and SLC is happening regularly about the new schedule and hopefully everything will be finalised soon. Earlier, we were only scheduled to play a three-Test series but now we are also trying to add some [shorter-version] matches and we have included that point in the new discussion which started after the suspension of ICC World T20,” said Akram to the media.

“The tour can take place either in September-October or October-November and we are working on it. A lot of things are to be taken into consideration before finalising the tour,’’ he concluded.
