Mushfiqur Rahim’s brilliant century helped defending champions Abahani Limited made a winning start of their Dhaka Premier League as they beat Partex Sporting Club at Mirpur’s Sher-e-Bangla national cricket stadium on Sunday.
The in-form Mushfiq, who scored a double ton in the recent one-off Test against Zimbabwe, made a belligerent 127 off 124 balls to propel his side to 289/7 before their bowlers bundled out the opponents for 208.
Although the ultimate difference was a big one but it was not a walk in the park for the victors as they made a disastrous start losing both their openers Liton Das and Mohammad Naim for ducks.
And the woe continues as Abahani gradually lost half of their side for just 67 but Mushfiq was there to make a fight and the diminutive batsman scribed a superlative story of comeback.

In his swashbuckling rearguard action, he got a great help in Mosaddek Hossain as the pair added 160 runs that only off 139 balls to salvage the side from ruin.
Abahani skipper Mushfiq, who struck 11 fours and four sixes to get his 12th list A century was ultimately perished in the 45th over, and Mosaddek followed him to pavilion three balls later scoring a well made 61 but Mohammad Saifuddin struck a whirlwind 39 in the end to put a big total on the board.
Saifuddin scored 39 off just 15 deliveries with five sixes and Abahani finished their innings as 289 losing seven wickets.
Partex opening bowler Jaynul Islam, who got rid of opener Naim, one-down Nazmul Hasan and Mushfiq, was brilliant with the ball as the right arm pacer took three wickets conceding just 28 runs and bowled five maidens out of his ten overs.
In reply, Partex lost wickets in regular intervals and their five-down batsman Nazmul Hossain Milon, who made 53, was the only batsman to cross the 50-run mark.
Young pacer Mehedi Hasan Rana was the highest wicket taker for Abahani as he took four wickets conceding 55 runs.

Abahni’s delighted captain, who was adjudged man of the match, said to media that it was an important win for his side and he is happy to lead the team from front.
“I always enjoy pressure while playing. If you can enjoy these pressure moments then as a player you can step ahead. I always try to contribute for my team in win. Initially I was a bit nervous. Abahani always target championship and want their captain to lead from the front. The wicket was tough to bat on initially but myself, Mosaddek and Saifuddin have batted really well,” said Mushfiq to media after the match.
Abahani will play their next match against Old DOHS at Fatullah on Wednesday.
