Bangladesh T20I skipper Mahmudullah has said he is aiming to build a competitive and stable team for the upcoming World T20I this year.
Mahmudullah was given the T20I captaincy after Shakib al Hasan was banned by the International Cricket Council last October. Since then, Bangladesh have played five T20Is under Mahmudullah and won only once.
Bangladesh have experimented with the T20I line-up over the last few months, but skipper Mahmudullah believes the team needs to settle down soon as the World T20 is approaching closer.
“I have discussed the tactics with the coach. I am very clear on what I want as a captain and what the coach wants from the team. I believe everyone will play according to their position. After the inclusion of Saifuddin as an all-rounder in the squad, the balance of the team is very good now. The World T20 is not far now. If we can build a good team from now and take every match step by step, then we can build a confident team for the World T20,” Mahmudullah told the media Sunday.
As a captain, Mahmudullah also want to be transparent with the players and gain their trust as leader, so that the team can achieve greater goals collectively.
“As a captain, I want to gain the trust of my teammate. Whatever the batting position, a batsman needs to understand his role and needs to play accordingly. I believe this is very important in T20 cricket. In T20 cricket, sometimes a batsman has to go for big shots from the very first ball. Top order batsmen may get some time to score runs, but batting at number six or seven is often difficult. A player might get out in first ball in those positions, while trying to play for the team or according to the situation. As a captain, I can say that these things will be considered from now on and I believe team management will support this,” he said.
“As a captain, I have the responsibility to give assurances to every player. In T20 cricket, one or two games may go bad for any player, but that does not mean that a player has to feel uncertain about his role in the team. As a captain, I have to ensure that players play with freedom and according to their role in the team. These things are important to build a good team,” Mahmudullah added.
