‘There’s no one like Mashrafe bhai’

Here’s how teammates of Mashrafe bin Mortaza reacted after getting to know about the charismatic captain’s decision to step down as ODI skipper following the third and final ODI against Zimbabwe today at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium

Update : 05 Mar 2020, 08:21 PM

Mushfiqur Rahim

There is no replacement to Mashrafe bhai. He is a part of the family, he is not only an elder brother to us but a big part of it. I will miss him as a captain. We had a big change since he took charge as captain, not only on the field but off the field too. I will hope he will continue playing till he can. It is an experience in itself to play with him and under him. I hope he will be able to give more to Bangladesh cricket in future.

I have enjoyed a lot playing under him not only because he has been a fantastic captain but also because he has been a friend and a brother. It has been six years since he took charge and Mashallah, a lot of success for the team. I wish him luck for his future and there is no doubt that he is a legend of the game for Bangladesh.

Tamim Iqbal

It is tough to express Mashrafe bhai in words. The cricketers, cricket board and the supporters should never forget his contribution for Bangladesh cricket. He should remain in us all the time. We were at a stage in 2015 and then got lifted till 2019 led by him. The way we are treated in ODIs around the world now has been possible just because of him. It is impossible to forget what he has done for me and for us. I wish him luck and hope we will get to see him more as a player.

I am sad since I heard about it [his decision to step down]. I do not have words to express bhai [Mashrafe]. He was the one who got me into the team. It is a sad day for all of us.

I will definitely miss him. He is the best captain we had in Bangladesh. You cannot express the support that he has given to cricket, especially to the juniors. I made my debut under him so it was a big achievement for me. He was always beside me and I saw him provide support to anyone who were new in the team.

Mohammad Mithun

We all know how he was to the cricketers as captain, and he is exceptional as an elder brother. We would go to him after any sort of trouble and he would always be there to support us. I got to know while ago that he will not be captain anymore and that it will be his last game [Friday]. Of course we will miss him a lot. Will definitely see him as a leader, doesn’t matter where we get to play next.

Taijul Islam

Not only for me but he has effected all the players in the country. He was always there as an important support when we got into the national team. We will miss him as a person and as a captain.

Mehedi Hasan Miraz

I have played around 40 ODIs under him and no day was different, he was always there as a support to me and to the team. We will miss him. We, the juniors in the team, got little of him but this is an experience for us to remember for the rest of our lives. And we were lucky. We have won a lot of matches under him.

Mashrafe, Mushfiq and Al Amin Hossain share a joke BCB

Al Amin Hossain

He is the most successful as captain in the country. He was always there as a protector of the team and had never let negativity touch us. It would have been better if he had stayed a bit more with us as captain. But then again it depends on the policy makers and individuals. I will pray so that he remains with us as a player for some more time.
