The first assignment for Mominul as a skipper is one of the toughest, as India are always considered one of the strongest competitors in the own backyard.

New Test captain of Bangladesh, Mominul Haque is considering captaincy as a great honor and believes extra responsibilities as a skipper will improve him as a player in near future.

Mominul was handed the captaincy by the BCB over the likes of Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur Rahim after regular captain Shalib al Hasan was banned by the International Cricket Council for two years, with one year of that suspended, last month for failing to report three corrupt approaches by a listed bookie to engage in illegal activities.

The first assignment for Mominul as a skipper is one of the toughest, as India are always considered one of the strongest competitors in the own backyard.

But Mominul is not worried too much about the challenge they will face Thursday against the host in Indore and seeing this as a great opportunity for not only himself, but also for the whole team, to perform well and make a mark.

“Since I have received the captaincy duty, I am not feeling pressure. The way I batted before captaincy, I will bat in the same way after being captain. I always try to think about the positive aspects. There are few positives in captaincy as well as your knowledge about the game will increase, or you will be more responsible as a player.  So think it will help to improve my performance or batting,” Mominul informed the media.

Mominul has been considered as one of the best Bangladesh Test players in the last six years or so.

The start of his career in the longest format was like a dream as he scored 11 consecutive half-centuries in as many Tests.

At one stage in his career, in late 2015, his average rose to 56.

He then struggled a bit but later bounced back strongly and now has the added responsibility as captain.

As a batsman, Mominul’s career stat now reads 2,613 runs in 37 Test matches (67 innings) with an average of 41.48, which is Bangladesh’s highest at the moment.

The left-hander has scored eight centuries and 13 fifties thus far.

As Shakib is banned for a year, Mominul is likely lead the Tigers in the coming days also.

So Bangladesh’s best player in Tests, according to stats, now has a big responsibility to fulfill, as, without Shakib, it would not be easy for the Tigers to win matches consistently in the coming year.

“I am excited as a captain. It’s a great opportunity for me.  All praise to Allah as not everyone gets this kind of chance. Now I want to utilize it.  Everyone is supporting me. As senior players both Riyad bhai and Mushfiq bhai are helping me, motivating me and guiding me. Everyone is motivated in the team as they are matured players. I think I don’t need to explain too much to players as a captain. It’s a great opportunity for us as we will play our first match in the Word Test championship [Thursday] against India. We know it will be difficult but everyone is preparing well to face the challenge,” he concluded.
