Left-handed batsman Soumya Sarkar, spin-all-rounder Mahedi Hasan, pacer Abu Hider Rony and Yeasin Mishu have been put out from the squad
Bangladesh cricket team has been going through a bad patch and selectors responded with a massive change as they removed four players and brought in five in the squad for the third and fourth T20I of the ongoing tri-nation.
Left-handed batsman Soumya Sarkar, spin-all-rounder Mahedi Hasan, pacer Abu Hider Rony and Yeasin Mishu have been put out from the squad.
Although the wholesale alteration raised questions, member of national selection panel, Habibul Bashar explained the rationale behind their decision to media.
The BCB on Monday morning declared the squad which has come at the back of a humiliating 25-run defeat against Afghanistan on Sunday evening.
Soumya’s omission from the fold has not come as a surprise. The left-handed opener has not been in runs since the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019.
Soumya has been irregular in Bangladesh Test and ODI team and now has been removed from the shortest version of the game.
“You all know that the High Performance is travelling to India tomorrow [Tuesday] and have Bangladesh A team travelling to Sri Lanka on 18th [September]. We had taken Yeasin Arafat Mishu and Sheikh Mahedi Hasan for the first two matches only as they had to leave for the second string teams. So these two were obvious changes,” said Bashar to the reporters in Dhaka on Monday.
“If someone has been a true change it has been Soumya Sarkar. He has not been in good form since the World Cup. We have T20 World Cup happening next year. We wanted to see few fresh faces. Those who have been included in the squad are all performing well in many levels.
“Naim Sheikh has played for the High Performance team and everyone is well aware of Nazmul Hossain Shanto. He has been in good form in last few series and though we had initially thought of having him only for Test and ODI.
So we thought to give the team management an option in Shanto. So that is why we got the changes in the squad,” former Bangladesh captain Bashar added.

have been included to make a 15-member squad. Pacers Shafiul Islam and Rubel Hossain have been brought back into the fold along with uncapped Shanto.
Teenaged leg-spin all-rounder Aminul Islam Biplob and exciting young opening batsman Mohammad Naim Sheikh are the other two inclusions in the squad. Nazmul has come as a strong candidate as an opener but there is also option in Naim.
The left-handed 20-year-old batter has been in the limelight in last couple of domestic seasons.
Aminul played for Bangladesh U19 as a batsman but has played as a leg-spinner for High Performance team.
Right-arm pacer Shafiul has been on and off in the national dressing room and played his last T20I against South Africa in 2017, while Rubel played his last T20I for Bangladesh on tour of West Indies last year.
“Rubel and Shafiul are always under our radar and they have been included in the squad when we could not find any other option to look at. Both of them are experienced and proven bowlers,” said Bashar.
