The Bangladesh Cricket Board Saturday named former South African coach Russell Domingo as the new head coach of the Bangladesh men’s cricket team.

With home series against Afghanistan and Zimbabwe starting early next month, the BCB was in a hurry to rope in a coach for the national team.

The post had gone vacant in July this year after BCB parted ways with Steve Rhodes on mutual agreement.

In its shortlist, the BCB had options in Mike Hesson, Chandika Hathurusingha and others but finally met terms with Domingo, who is set to take charge from Wednesday.

Domingo has been handed a two-year deal.

Explaining the reason for signing Domingo, BCB president Nazmul Hasan said, “We have decided to pick Russell as he will be available. There were other candidates but we wanted someone who could be available for us, and certainly he has got the experience. We want a coach who can have a long-term plan, and he fits that category because he is not interested in taking leave.

"He has a wealth of experience and we have been very impressed with his passion and coaching philosophy. He has a clear idea of what is required to take the team forward. We are very delighted to see that a lot of high-profile coaches expressed eagerness to work with us. I thanked them from the bottom of my heart for showing interest. It was very difficult for us to select the head coach as a lot of high-profile coaches showed interest. So it was a tough decision to take for us.

"Domingo wants to integrate the national team with the A team, HP and U-19s, so that our strong pipeline becomes useful.

"He has showed his commitment. He said he will be here all the time, and we have been looking for someone just like him. A coach who can be with the players all the time.”

In a BCB release, newly-appointed Bangladesh coach Domingo said he was eagerly looking ahead to his new challenge.

“It is a massive honor to be appointed the head coach of the Bangladesh national cricket team. I have followed Bangladesh’s progress with keen interest and I am extremely excited to assist the team in reaching the goals that they are capable of,” said Domingo.

“I look forward to continuing the ongoing development of current players, whilst also looking towards the future and developing some new bright stars from within the talent pool of Bangladesh cricket,” the former Proteas coach added.

Domingo visited Dhaka on August 7 for an interview with the BCB president and other high-ups.

Right after the meeting, cricket’s governing body in the country expressed satisfaction over Domingo’s plan with Bangladesh, if he is assigned to play the role.

Domingo had played junior cricket for Eastern Province before moving into coaching at an early age.

He became South Africa U-19 coach for the 2004 U-19 World Cup in Bangladesh.

In 2010, Domingo was made the coach of South Africa A team for the tour of Bangladesh.

Domingo was appointed assistant coach of the South Africa national team in 2011 and took over from Gary Kirsten as coach of the T20I squad in December 2012 before replacing Kirsten as national team head coach in 2013, a post he held up to 2017.

He has led South Africa to the semi-final of the 2014 World T20I in Bangladesh and the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Domingo has also coached the Warriors franchise in South Africa’s domestic one-day and T20 competitions and at the Champions League T20.
