Former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum had to eat his own words as Bangladesh made a flying start to their World Cup 2019 campaign, defeating South Africa by 21 runs at the Oval in London Sunday.

Prior to the start of the tournament, McCullum predicted that the Tigers would go on to win only one match, against Sri Lanka, in the entire single round-robin stage, much to the ire of the Bangladesh fans.

But right after the Tigers’ memorable triumph against the Proteas, McCullum praised Bangladesh’s performance and defended himself in a post on his official Twitter account, saying he can’t possibly predict all the matches correctly.

He said, “Impressive performance from @BCBtigers to defeat @OfficialCSA. I expected SA to win but Bangladesh played well. In regards to my predictions, thanks for the feedback on getting this one wrong. Won’t be the last but average at the end will look alright I think. Can’t win em all.”

By that time though, it was already too late as the Tigers fans had much pleasure recalling McCullum’s statement on social media, with many sharing the ex-Kiwi skipper’s prediction photo as fun.
