Abahani Limited and Legends of Rupganj have each secured eight wins in nine matches to make it to the top of the standing

The top two teams in the points table, Abahani Limited and Legends of Rupganj will lock horns in a crucial affair in the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium Sunday.

Abahani and Rupganj have each secured eight wins in nine matches to make it to the top of the standing.

Both the sides are aware of the fact that a victory in this game will give the winning side a big edge as far as progressing into the Super League phase of the tournament is concerned.

Abahani have been boosted with the presence of national cricketers in the shape of Mashrafe bin Mortaza, Soumya Sarkar, Sabbir Rahman and Mehedi Hasan Miraz, among others and this was not lost on their head coach Khaled Mahmud.

“We are ahead of them in the table (in terms of run rate). The game is vital for us. There will be five matches in the Super League but a win [Sunday] will be vital. No doubt we are a strong team on pen and paper, and we are here to win the title. But Rupganj have been playing good cricket. We believe we are a good team and can certainly think of winning the game. The potential of the players we have makes the team very strong,” said a confident Mahmud to the media in Mirpur Saturday.

Rupganj in contrast have relied on the mantra of “team effort” this season and this aspect has been key behind their success.

However, statistics are against Rupganj as they have beaten the Sky Blues only once in their last five meetings.

Rupganj last won against Abahani in the Dhaka League in season 2016 in a rain-affected game.

“Abahani are a very good team but good thing is we have been able to produce performances almost equal to them this season so far. We are equal on points but a bit behind in run rate. It is tough to predict the result. In the last game in Mirpur, Mohammedan (Sporting Club Limited) failed to defend despite scoring a big total, and then there are Gazi Group (Cricketers) who defended successfully after scoring just 100 runs. The better team will win the game,” said Rupganj stalwart Shahriar Nafees.

In the other two matches of the day, Lt. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Limited will take on BKSP at Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium in Fatullah while at BKSP Ground 4, Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club will face Uttara Sporting Club.

Sheikh Jamal are eighth in the table with four wins in nine games while their opponent BKSP are ninth with just two victories.

Uttara Sporting are down at the bottom but in their bid to stave off relegation, they will face a tough task against Doleshwar, who are fourth with six wins in nine games.
