The Bangladesh cricket team are on their way back to Dhaka, following terror attacks at two mosques in Christchurch.

The team left New Zealand for Dhaka at around 5am Saturday, Bangladesh standard time, after their third and final Test match with the Kiwis was cancelled, Deputy High Commissioner of Bangladesh Mission in Australia, Tareq Ahmed confirmed.

He said, “The cricketers will reach Dhaka in due time via Singapore.”

The cricket team are expected to arrive at the Dhaka airport at around 10:40pm.

The urgent decision to bring back the Bangladesh team was taken after gunmen carried out terrorist attacks in two mosques in New Zealand’s Christchurch that killed 49 people, including three Bangladeshis.

According to Bangladesh team members, a group had decided to go to Masjid Al Noor mosque at 1:30pm New Zealand time, a few blocks away from the stadium.

However, the scheduled time was delayed by around seven minutes due to a pre-match press conference of interim Bangladesh Test captain Mahmudullah.

The Bangladeshi players escaped unhurt but the incident left the players in distraught state, said Bangladesh team manager Khaled Mashud.

In the wake of the situation, the BCB and New Zealand Cricket jointly decided to cancel the third Test, slated to begin Saturday.
