Laurie Evans made 104 to help Rajshahi Kings reach 176/3 before his teammate Kamrul Islam Rabbi got 4/10 to wrap up the Comilla Victorians for 138, and keep them firmly in the top four of the points table

Rajshahi Kings’ English batsman Laurie Evans became the first player to score a century in the sixth edition of the Bangladesh Premier League as his side beat Comilla Victorians by 38 runs Monday at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

Evans made 104 to help Rajshahi reach 176/3 before his teammate Kamrul Islam Rabbi got 4/10 to wrap up the Comilla for 138, and keep them firmly in the top four of the points table.

How the action unfolded

Asked to bat first, the Kings lost their opener Shahriar Nafees, who made five, in the second over.

Things got from bad to worse as their skipper Mehedi Hasan Miraz got out for a duck in the fourth over, and the experienced Marshall Ayub for two in the seventh over.

But Kings’ two foreign recruits - Evans and Dutchman Ryan ten Doeschate - started to resurrect the innings from a precarious 28/3.

Game changers

Initially the pair started to recover the damage and roll the scoreboard along with ones and twos with occasional boundaries, but after the end of the 13th over, when the score was 70, they started to get loose.

Sri Lankan Thisara Perera came on to bowl the 14th over and the batsmen targeted his military medium pace bowling, and struck three sixes.

Two of them came from the bat of Evans.

The floodgates opened and both batsmen maintained the onslaught till the end of the innings to post a big score on the board.

Key moments

Evans-Doeschate partnership biggest this season

The unbroken 148-run fourth-wicket stand between Evans and Ten Doeschate is the highest in this edition, surpassing the 121-run partnership by Rilee Rossouw and Mohammad Mithun that they made for Rangpur Riders against Dhaka Dynamites.

This is also the best fourth-wicket stand in the history of BPL, leapfrogging the unbeaten 123 by Mashrafe bin Mortaza and Marlon Samuels back in 2015.

Evans scored nine fours and half a dozen sixes in his 62-ball knock, while Ten Doeschate struck two fours and three sixes in his 59-run innings that came off 41 balls.

Rabbi shows his class

Pacer Rabbi has been impressive in this BPL but he reached his peak while opening the bowling for Kings when they started to defend the total.

Comilla started the innings cautiously, but Rabbi got the breakthrough by removing their star batsman Tamim Iqbal for 25 when the score was 37.

All the top six batsmen of Comilla scored in double figure but none could make a big score and the scoreboard pressure started to mount.

In the end they were bundled out in 18.2 overs to concede the match.

Rabbi returned with his best ever T20 figure, while Ten Doeschate chipped in with two wickets.

Evans was adjudged man-of-the-match for his batting heroics.

What this result means

With this result, Rajshahi and Comilla both now have eight points from seven matches, but the latter are third in the table courtesy a superior run rate.

Victorians will face Dhaka Tuesday evening at the same venue, while Kings will play their next match Wednesday against Chittagong Vikings.
