Soumya, Taskin pick 5-for in NCL

Three bagged five-wicket hauls, the first ever in first class matches for national discard Taskin, 17-year old Nayeem and the second for Soumya

Pacer Taskin Ahmed, off-spinner Nayeem Hasan shone with ball while Soumya Sarkar showed brilliant performance both with bat and bowl in the third day of the third round matches of National Cricket League on Wednesday. 

All three bagged five-wicket hauls, the first ever in first class matches for national discard Taskin and 17-year old Nayeem while the second for Soumya, who is regarded as a top order batsman.  

With the bat, Chittagong division batsman Tasammul Haque recorded his 13th first class century and six other batsmen made fifties across the venues. 

Khulna v Rangpur

Soumya’s all-round performance along with Tushar Imran’s unbeaten half century helped Khulna ended the penultimate day on a competitive position, as they were on 181-5 in their second innings, leading by 170 runs against Rangpur at Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium in Khulna.

Rangpur resumed the day on 200-4 and looked forward to get a big lead replying Khulna’s 304. But Soumya picked up wickets in regular intervals to return with a figure of 5-61 and get them all-out for 315, allowing a slender lead of 11 runs. 

Overnight batsman Tanbir Haider remained not out on 67, the highest in the innings as he ran out of partners, and Soumya’s fellow pacer Al-Amin Hossain, who grabbed three wickets in the previous day, took another wicket to finish on 4-67. 

In the second innings, Soumya made 71 and formed a vital 106-run third wicket stand with Tushar, who will resume on 63 today to progress the innings further. 

Dhaka Metro v Chittagong

Dhaka Metro ended the day with a lead of 242 runs with four second innings wickets against Chittagong despite heroics by Tasamul and Nayeem at Shaheed Chandu Stadium, Bogra.

Chittagong resumed the day on 187-6 replying Metro’s 287 and despite Tasamul, who resumed on 81, made 116 the port-side were bundled out for 236, conceding a 51-run first inning lead. 

Metro pacer Taskin finished with 5-67 before their batsmen ended the day on 191-6. Chittagong’s Nayeem ended the day with 5-99. 

Barisal v Rajshahi

After first two days were washed off the third day of the match belonged to bowlers at Barisal Divisional Stadium. Hosts were sent into bat before being bundled out for 133 with Farhad Reza getting four wickets while Muktar Ali and Taijul Islam got two apiece for Rajshahi. 

Barisal bowlers also matched with a fitting reply as Rajshahi ended the day on 125-9 as Sohag Gazi picked three scalps while Kamrul Islam Rabbi, Monir Hossain and Tanvir Islam got two each. 

At a stage Rajshahi were reeling on 85-9 but Muktar and and number 11 Abdul Gaffar, who were not out on 35 and five respectively, showed a rearguard action will resume to get the vital first-innings lead. 

Sylhet v Dhaka Div

At Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium Academy Ground, Cox's Bazar, the match got underway after two abandoned days and Sylhet batsmen Zakir Hossain (84) and Rajin Saleh(64) made some good batting practice to finish the day on 229-2. After openers Imtiaz Hossain and Towfiq Khan were out for 41 and 35 runs respectively, the duo added 147 runs and will resume to carry forward their innings.
