Junior Tigers begin with defeat

The junior Tigers will take on Pakistan in their next group stage game Monday in the port city before locking horns with Hong Kong a day later at the same venue

Bangladesh U-19 team suffered a setback in their bid to qualify for the semi-final of the U-19 Asia Cup as they lost to their Sri Lanka counterparts by six wickets at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Cricket Stadium in Chittagong Saturday.

Asked to bat first, the home side capitulated to 141 all out in 46.4 overs, captain Towhid Hridoy top-scoring with 35, but none of the other batters crossed 24 in the face of some disciplined bowling by the Lankan youngsters. Sri Lanka’s Kalhara Senarathne, Shashika Dulshan and Dulith Wellalage bagged two wickets each.

In reply, the visiting side romped home in 37.5 overs, middle-order batsman Nuwanidu Fernando scoring the highest 64 not out. Bangladesh’s Shariful Islam took two wickets.

The Group A and B champions and runners-up sides will qualify for the last four.

In the other matches of the day, India thrashed Nepal by 171 runs at BKSP, Savar in Dhaka, Pakistan blanked Hong Kong by nine wickets at MA Aziz Stadium in Chittagong and Afghanistan beat the UAE by five wickets at BKSP.

Afghanistan U-19 144/5 in 27 overs (Omarzai 50*, Baseer 22*) beat UAE U-19 140 in 43.5 overs (Brandon 25, Qais 4/40) by five wickets
