With just around a week before the tournament, the world’s top-ranked all-rounder expressed concern over his physical condition and availability for the tournament
Bangladesh’s preparation for the Asia Cup received a big setback as their all-rounder Shakib al Hasan cited speculation over his efficiency ahead of the tournament.
Shakib is included in the squad, despite carrying an injury, but he expressed anxiety about his full-fitness that may bar him from playing. After returning from Bangladesh’s West Indies tour, the Test and T20I captain informed that he needed to undergo an immediate operation to cure his injured finger.
But after several discussions, it was decided that the southpaw will remain with the squad for the six-nation Asia Cup that will commence on September 15 in the UAE. Bangladesh will take on Sri Lanka in the curtain raiser at Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
But with just around a week before the tournament, the world’s top-ranked all-rounder expressed concern over his physical condition and availability for the tournament.
“I would say I am 20-30% fit right now. I still have pain in my hand, so honestly, I don't know how I would bat or bowl. I am out of practice for some time so I have no idea,” said Shakib in an interview with one of the national English dailies Tuesday.

The southpaw, who is currently in the USA, also said he might go straight under the knife if he does not feel right once joining the squad in Dubai.
“I don't know. Normally top players don't play if they have an injury. Let's see when I go there - if things don't look good I might go straight for surgery from there (laughs),” Shakib was quoted as saying in the interview.
Chief of the national selection panel, Minhajul Abedin was reached for a comment on the issue. Minhajul informed that he is unaware of it and that he needed to speak with the concerned parties before making any comment.
However, Dhaka Tribune learnt from several sources that Shakib is in continuous touch with the national team physio Thihan Chandramohan and the all-rounder has informed his hesitancy to the physio. It is understood that the top management of the BCB is also aware of Shakib’s condition and it will not be surprising if Bangladesh’s mercurial all-rounder is unavailable during the Asia Cup.
