Chief national selector Minhajul Abedin expects all-rounder Shakib al Hasan to join the camp for the Asia Cup, scheduled to start next Monday in Dhaka. The statement from Minhajul is a possible indication that Shakib would be available for Bangladesh in the six-nation regional tournament, set to begin in the UAE on September 15 this year.

Availability of Shakib for the Asia Cup was put in doubt after the Test and T20I captain wished to undergo an immediate surgery on his injured little left finger following the tour of the West Indies earlier this month.

BCB president Nazmul Hasan had hoped that Shakib would be available and undergo surgery later, given the merit of an important tournament like the Asia Cup. The BCB boss however, left the final decision on Shakib and the medical team.

Former Bangladesh skipper Minhajul informed that he is yet to get an update on Shakib’s plan or decision regarding the injury. The chief of the national selection panel expects the left-arm all-rounder to report to the camp, slated for later this month.

“We do not have any update of surgery yet so we have not thought of it [replacement], to be honest,’’ said Minhajul to the media at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka Saturday.

‘’We will start thinking about it as soon as we have an update of his surgery. The camp starts on August 27 and we hope he will be able to join the camp,” Minhajul added.

Shakib picked up the injury during the ODI tri-nation series final in Dhaka in January this year. The cricketer later missed the two-match Test series and two T20Is against Sri Lanka before joining the squad halfway through the Nidahas T20I Trophy in Sri Lanka in March.
