Nazmul could miss Asia Cup; Shakib to have surgery

Nazmul while bowling his first over in the Windies chase sustained the injury after non-strike batsman Chadwick Walton while getting out of the way of the shot inadvertently stepped on the fingers of Nazmul and forced the Bangladesh bowler off the field

Bangladesh left-arm spinner Nazmul Islam will initially take at least two to three weeks before the BCB medical team can assume a recovery time. Nazmul suffered a soft tissue injury during the third and the final T20I match of the series against West Indies in Lauderhill, Florida on Sunday.

Nazmul while bowling his first over in the Windies chase sustained the injury after non-strike batsman Chadwick Walton while getting out of the way of the shot inadvertently stepped on the fingers of Nazmul and forced the Bangladesh bowler off the field. The bowler was rushed to the hospital and medical reports revealed he had suffered lacerations in four places on his left-hand.

“He has suffered the injury on his bowling hand. X-rays showed he does not have any fracture but lacerations in four areas. He was given almost 25 stitches which we will remove after two to three weeks. We will be able to estimate his recovery time only after the stitches are removed. Till then he will have to be in complete rest,” said BCB physician Dr Debashish Chowdhury to the media on Tuesday.

The injury has put the availability of Nazmul for the ACC Asia Cup 2018 in doubt. The tournament is to be held in Dubai next month and the time in hand for recovery is very limited.

“It is very important that he takes rest to heal the injury following which he will have to do rehab. So for now he has no chance to return to action in next three weeks,” said Debashish.

Meanwhile a long sustained dislocation on little finger of Shakib Al Hasan will need surgery informed Dr Debashish. According to the BCB doctor, all-rounder has no trouble in playing but the cricketer has to deal with severe pain and receive injections which is only a temporary solution. Shakib had picked the injury on his left little finger during the tri-nation ODI series in January this year.

The challenge with Shakib is the recovery time, of two to three months, which he will need after the surgery.

“He has dislocation on his little left finger and it’s a problem for him while batting. He is not being able to give 100 percent due to the injury. We are to sit with the team management and Shakib when they comes back (from USA). He will need a surgery to recover from this but that will put him in off for around two months. You know we have a packed schedule right now so we will need to look for a window in the schedule to make him undergo the surgery,” said Dr Debashish.

“At this moment he is not being able to fold his finger 100 percent and he feels pain and has to take injections for that. He is being able to play with this but this is just a temporary solution. Surgery will not give him a 100 percent recovery but better a percentage of being able to fold the finger,” the BCB doctor explained.
