Bangladesh A's Ariful Haque goes big during their first one-dayer against Sri Lanka A in Sylhet Tuesday BCB

Bangladesh A team pacer Khaled Ahmed’s last-ball heroics guided the home side to a winning start in the three-match one-day series against Sri Lanka A side. The host won by two runs against the visiting side at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium Tuesday.

Chasing 281, the Lankans needed three runs off the last ball of the innings. And it was Khaled who kept his composure, dismissing lower-order batsman Shehan Madushanka to wrap up the Lankan innings.

Right-arm paceman Khaled recorded his career best List A figure, finishing with four wickets for 72 runs in his stipulated 10 overs. Left-arm pace bowler Shariful Islam provided Khaled valuable support by bagging three wickets while occasional right-arm seamer Ariful Haque picked up two.

Middle-order batter Dasun Shanaka top-scored for the tourist with 78, his highest List A score. The right-handed batsman faced 78 balls and struck two fours and half a dozen sixes before being dismissed by Khaled in the 46th over.

Earlier, the Bangladeshis, asked to bat first, posted 280 for the loss of seven wickets in their allotted 50 overs. The home side got off to a decent start as openers Mizanur Rahman and Soumya Sarkar added 42 before the latter departed for 24.

No 3 batsman Zakir Hasan made 18 but upon his dismissal, Bangladesh A were reeling on 77/2 in 21.1 overs. Mizanur made 67 off 107 deliveries, featuring four boundaries and three over boundaries.

Bangladesh A captain Mohammad Mithun (44 off 44 balls) and No 4 batsman Fazle Mahmud (59 off 63 balls) added 95 for the fourth wicket. Fazle was then caught short of the crease in the 45th over.

Ariful hammered some lusty blows in his blazing 22-ball 47, including three fours and four sixers, before perishing with three balls remaining in the innings. Left-arm spinner Malinda Pushpakumara was the most economical Lankan bowler with 1/44 from his quota of 10 overs.

The second one-dayer will be held at the same venue Thursday.
