Courtney Walsh said he demands better performance from the pacers, and also admitted slight concern regarding Mustafizur Rahman, who has just returned from the IPL T20 2018

Bangladesh interim head coach Courtney Walsh believes the Afghanistan series will be key for the Tigers ahead of the West Indies tour, and even the World T20I in two years’ time.

Bangladesh’s T20I record in the last few years is not so impressive, compared to the ODI and Test match format. The Tigers however, showed a lot of improvements in the shortest format of the game in the last T20I series, the Nidahas Trophy, under Walsh’s coaching.

Now it is time for Bangladesh to keep up the momentum after a two-month break from international cricket and play a positive brand of cricket against the Afghans, who are a competitive side in T20Is.

Walsh believes Bangladesh should not concentrate too much on the opposition’s good form and focus on their own game. Walsh said performing well in the Afghanistan T20Is will certainly help the Tigers to keep up the momentum in the future series’.

“Afghanistan have a good team and if we play to our strength and depth, we should come out on top. The moment you are thinking of losing, then you get doubts and you don’t perform at your best. We have to be positive and back ourselves. We have to be confident, and not think about losing,” Walsh said to the media during the pre-tournament press conference at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka Sunday.

“We are going to play in the West Indies, and the World (T20I) is coming up. I think it is important to keep playing competitive cricket. It might not be 50 overs, but you can get confidence from any sort of competition. I don’t think our cricketers play as much cricket as some other countries. The more we play, the better chance we have of improving,” he added.

Walsh said he demands better performance from the pacers, and also admitted slight concern regarding Mustafizur Rahman, who has just returned from the IPL T20 2018. Mustafizur did not perform well in the IPL this season for Mumbai Indians and is dealing with a slight toe problem at the moment. But Walsh believes Mustafizur will come back strong against the Afghans.

“At the moment he has a slight toe problem. He is not 100% now. We have given him a couple of days off. We want him firing when we get to India. He has improved quite a lot. His strength has come back. I think he is getting there in his pace. I think he will deliver in India. The bowlers have to put their hands up, but not just Rubel [Hossain] or Fizz. Whichever seam bowler we use, we want them to stand out. Our spinners have always been consistent,” he concluded.
