BCB president Nazmul Hasan also informed the media that Gary Kirsten has already made a shortlist for the vacant head coach’s position

South African great and former Proteas head coach Gary Kirsten will assist the BCB in finding a new head coach for the Bangladesh team.

BCB president Nazmul Hasan also informed the media that Kirsten has already made a shortlist for the vacant head coach’s position.

“Kirsten is enquiring some candidates for our head coach’s position. He is taking interviews of players and coaching staffs and he is also discussing with me. Actually, he wants to know what type of coach we are looking for. He wants to recommend someone after knowing what type of coach we are preferring for the national and academy team. After considering all these factors, he will give a presentation later and then we will finalise the decision,” said Nazmul.

The BCB boss said Kirsten is likely to arrive in Bangladesh next week, depending on his IPL duty with the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Kirsten is currently working as a batting coach for the Royal Challengers.

The BCB is yet to find a head coach for the national team after the resignation of former head coach Chandika Hathurusingha last November.

After that, Bangladesh played a tri-series at home without a designated head coach. Several candidates, including Richard Pybus and Phil Simmons, gave interview to the BCB for the vacant position but no deal was finalised.

Later, pace bowling coach Courtney Walsh was given the role of interim head coach for the Nidahas T20 tri-nation series. Bangladesh played well in the series, losing narrowly against India in the final.

The BCB chief is hoping to find the new head coach before the West Indies tour where Bangladesh will play two Test matches, three ODIs and two T20Is.

“It is really difficult for us to find a new head coach before the Afghanistan series. So the same coaching staff from the last series is likely to be in charge. But definitely, we are hoping to find our new head coach before the West Indies series.
