Nazmus Sadat's boundary off the last ball of the chase rescued Brothers Union from getting relegated from the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League 2017-18 season. With 10 points each, both Brothers and Agrani Bank Cricket Club were facing a do-or-die situation ahead of their game at BKSP Wednesday but it is the former who prevailed.
Defending 334 runs, Agrani Bank, who were promoted to the premier league this season, had taken the game to the last over where Brothers needed nine runs for the precious victory. Agrani Bank’s Indian recruit Rishi Dhawan bowling the crucial final over of the game had taken the tie to the very last ball, giving away only five runs and taking a wicket in the first five balls.
But Agrani Bank were denied victory as Sadat, on strike, fetched the relegation-saving four runs for Brothers. Agrani Bank in the process got demoted to the Dhaka First Division League, along with Kalabagan Krira Chakra.
Kalabagan finished at the bottom of the points table with only four points after round 13.
Asked to bat first, Agrani Bank, riding on Soumya Sarkar's magnificent 154 off 127 balls, posted 334 on the board losing all of their wickets with five balls still remaining in their innings. Left-handed opener Soumya in his innings slammed nine boundaries and 11 over boundaries to frustrate the opposition bowlers. The effort was well complemented by Dhawan, who added an unbeaten 65-ball 80 to the tally with nine fours and a six. Brothers' bowlers Sohrawardi Shuvo and Shakhawat Hossain picked up three wickets each.
Chasing the target, Brothers made a flying start with all of their top-four batsmen scoring half-centuries. The openers Mizanur Rahman and Junaid Siddique added 121 to ensure Brothers got off to a smooth start. Mizanur and Junaid scored 62 and 83 respectively before Mysukur Rahman and Debabrata Das added 82 and 73 to the chase accordingly. However, two quick dismissals of Alok Kapali (nine) and Yasir Ali (nought) had shaken Brothers’ progress.
With five wickets in hand, Brothers needed 18 off the last eight deliveries in the innings and despite losing Debabrata in the final over, the side reached their destination, thanks to Sadat’s heroics. Dhawan picked up three wickets for Agrani Bank.
335/6 (Junaid 83, Mysukur 82) beat Agrani Bank
334 in 49.1 overs (Soumya 154, Dhawan 80*) by four wickets
