Former Bangladesh opener Nafees Iqbal has joined Indian Premier League T20 franchise Mumbai Indians ahead of the 2018 edition.
Nafees was appointed to guide Mumbai’s Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman. Left-armer Mustafizur is a bit weak while communicating in English so Nafees will be in charge to make sure the Bangladesh pacer understands the instructions and follows the team strategies properly.
It is understood the call of appointing Nafees had come from the side’s head coach Mahela Jayawardene. Sri Lanka legend Mahela and Nafees are colleagues in the Bangladesh Premier League T20 for franchise Khulna Titans.
Mahela and Nafees work for the Titans as the head coach and manager respectively. It is understood that Nafees has been appointed initially for three weeks to guide the Fizz.
“It happened all of sudden and now I am in the Mumbai tent. My job will be to guide Mustafizur in the tournament and ensure the team management gets the best off him and accordingly,” said Nafees to Dhaka Tribune after joining the IPL franchise in Mumbai Monday.
Nafees believes his tenure with Mumbai will enrich his knowledge on operating a franchise.
“I am looking forward to bagging experience at a big side, and one of the most biggest franchise cricket teams in the world. I will try to implement the learnings when I return home,” said Nafees.
The curtain of the 11th IPL will be raised Saturday when Mumbai take on Chennai Super Kings at Wankhede Stadium.
On the other hand, ace all-rounder Shakib al Hasan is the only other Bangladeshi participating in the money-spinning T20 tournament. Shakib was picked up by Sunrisers Hyderabad in the players’ auction. Shakib left Dhaka Monday to join the Sunrisers, who are set to start their campaign Monday taking on Rajasthan Royals at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.
