League leader Abahani Limited posted a crucial 20-run win (Duckworth/Lewis method) over Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club in their rain-affected Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League 2017-18 season match at BKSP 3 and inched towards the title Friday.
In the other games of the day, Lt. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club won by eight runs (D/L method) against holder Gazi Group Cricketers at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka and second placed Legends of Rupganj defeated surprise package Khelaghar Samaj Kalyan Samity by 12 runs at Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Cricket Stadium in Fatullah.
Abahani v Doleshwar
Batting first, Abahani registered a mammoth total of 394 losing four wickets in their stipulated 50 overs. This is the highest total in the history of the Dhaka League. The previous record was also set by Abahani, which was 371 against Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited in 2015. Abahani’s opening pair Anamul Haque and Nazmul Hossain Shanto both scored centuries and formed a 236-run partnership in 36 overs. Anamul scored 128 off 126 balls with seven fours and half a dozen sixes while Shanto made 121 off just 106 deliveries with a dozen boundaries and a couple of over boundaries. In-form batsman Hanuma Bihari scored a whirlwind 36-ball 66 while wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Mithun made a quickfire 24-ball 47.
In reply, Doleshwar lost both the openers quickly. No 3 batsman Fazle Mahmud and national discard Marshall Ayub both scored hundreds, adding 207 for the third wicket stand. At one stage, Doleshwar were batting on 217 for the loss of two wickets after 30 overs when rain intervened. Later, Dolehswar were given a revised 278-run target in 36 overs. Eventually, they managed to score 244/3 in 34.1 overs when rain interrupted the proceedings again.
Fazle scored 100 off 87 balls while Marshall was unbeaten on 108 off 88 deliveries.
Sk Jamal v Gazi Group
Asked to bat first, Sheikh Jamal made 248 losing all of their wickets in 47.4 overs. All-rounder Ziaur Rahman scored some quick runs in the middle-order, making 86 off 74 balls with six fours and five sixers. In-form all-rounder Tanbir Hayder and opener Saykat Ali scored 50 and 51 respectively. Seamer Abu Haider picked up four wickets for Gazi Group.
In pursuit of 249, Gazi Group scored 217/7 in 47 overs when rain intervened. The match did not continue and Sheikh Jamal were declared the winner in accordance with the D/L method. Gazi Group’s Jaker Ali was the top-scorer with 61. Sheikh Jamal’s Robul Haque bagged three wickets.
Rupganj v Khelaghar
Invited to take first guard, Rupganj made 216/8 in their allotted 50 overs. Lower-order batsman Nazmul Hossain Milon scored a vital unbeaten half-century in the latter part of the innings to take the score past 200. The right-hander was unbeaten on 63 off 66 balls, featuring three fours and two sixes. Khelaghar’s Mohammad Saddam and Tanvir Islam shared seven wickets between themselves.
In reply, Khelaghar managed 204 before being dismissed in 48.5 overs. Opener Mahidul Islam Ankon scored 77 while captain Nazimuddin made 45.
