Former Bangladesh captain Mohammad Ashraful notched his second consecutive century, and fourth overall, in the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League season 2017-18. The feat however, could not boost his side Kalabagan Krira Chakra as they suffered a six-wicket loss against Agrani Bank Cricket Club at BKSP in Savar Thursday. Agrani Bank, riding on opener Shahriar Nafees’ 109, registered a crucial victory in the first game of this season’s relegation league.
Ashraful has hammered four centuries and a half-century so far in the tournament, scoring 563 runs at an average of 56.3. The right-handed batsman with his bagful of runs has created quite a stir in the cricketing arena, giving birth to questions if Ashraful might return to the international arena. Ashraful, who was found guilty of match-fixing, will be eligible for national selection in August this year and the Bangladesh Premier League T20 2018.
Ashraful’s unbeaten 103 and middle-order batsman Taibur Rahman’s 82 enabled Kalabagan, batting first, to recover from a shaky start. Kalabagan eventually posted 246 on the board for the loss of five wickets in their stipulated 50 overs. Ashraful slammed eight boundaries and two over boundaries. Right-arm medium pacer Soumya Sarkar picked up two wickets for Agrani Bank.
In reply, Agrani Bank chased down the target with relative ease thanks to Shahriar’s 109 off 142 balls, featuring 13 fours and a couple of sixes. The effort was complemented by No 3 batsman Salman Hossain’s 83 as Agrani Bank reached the shore in 45.5 overs. Opening bowler Nahid Hasan and Ashraful bagged two wickets apiece for Kalabagan.
