11th ULAB Fair Play Cup: Clinical ULAB emerge champion
ULAB clinched the 11th ULAB Fair Play Cup Inter Private University Cricket Tournament 2018 after beating Bangladesh University by seven wickets at Mohammadpur in Dhaka Thursday. Asked to bat first, BU posted 118 runs before losing all of their wickets in 19.5 overs. Player of the final Arifur Rahman bagged three wickets conceding 20 runs in his quota of four overs. In reply, ULAB reached their target in 18.2 overs. Former Bangladesh cricket team captain Habibul Bashar was present during the presentation ceremony as the special guest. Special advisor to the ULAB board of trustees, professor Imran Rahman delivered the welcome speech during the occasion while treasurer Milan Kumar Bhattacharjee was also present. Bashar said, “ULAB is making a bunch of new cricketers by arranging such tournaments. I hope they continue such ventures in the future.” BU’s Shafiqul Islam finished as the highest wicket-taker with 10 scalps while ULAB’s Noman Jeko with 241 runs ended as the top run-scorer. Saimon Ahmed of BU took four catches to finish as the best fielder while ULAB’s Sabit Hossain was the best player of the tournament with four catches and two stumpings, and 119 runs. A total of 12 private universities took part in the tournament – North South University, BRAC University, Southeast University, Daffodil International University, Prime University, Green University, European University of Bangladesh, Independent University, Bangladesh, Stamford University Bangladesh, BU, Uttara University and host ULAB. Twenty matches were held throughout the tournament. The winning side received Tk50,000, and earned the right to participate in the Red Bull Campus Cricket World Final Tournament, while the runners-up got Tk30,000. ULAB have now won the Fair Play Cup six times in 11 editions.
