Having arrived in Colombo with memories of the dreadful recent past at home, makeshift Bangladesh T20I captain Mahmudullah expects the Nidahas T20I tri-nation series to be a big opportunity for the Tigers to recover from the damage.
The Tigers might not be in the best shape possible, compared to India and host Sri Lanka, the two other teams in the tri-series, but they can always try to make some impact.
Mahmudullah made the statement at the Nidahas trophy unveiling ceremony Monday.
Although Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will enter the tournament with full intensity and their best possible squads, India have arrived with a team mostly based on youth. The Indians have rested six regular members, including the likes of Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni and Hardik Pandya, among others, and gave the interim charge to Rohit Sharma to lead the team.
"I would first like to congratulate Sri Lanka cricket for being able to host such a tournament. As far as Bangladesh team are concerned, I think it is a good chance for us to make a statement. We look forward to performing well and putting on a good show for the fans back home," said Mahmudullah.
Bangladesh dressing room was dealt a major blow when prominent captain Shakib al Hasan was ruled out of the entire series after failing to recuperate from injury. However, Mahmudullah believes that should not be a worry and the one who gets opportunity in the team in place of Shakib should think of making the best use of the chance.
"It is always a big loss not having Shakib in the team. We missed him in the home series too. But this is an opportunity for another guy to show his skills, make an impression and contribute for the team," said Mahmudullah.
The Nidahas series starts Tuesday with host Sri Lanka taking on India in the tournament opener. Bangladesh will start their campaign Thursday against India. All the matches of the series will be held at R Premadasa Cricket Stadium in Colombo.
