Soumya: Will try to prove myself
Bangladesh opener Soumya Sarkar vowed to perform well and get back to his best against host Sri Lanka and visiting India in the Nidahas series 2018. The Tigers took part in training at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka Friday under interim coach Courtney Walsh ahead of the tri-nation T20I series. “There will be two different opponents there. So our plan will be different and our playing pattern will be different as well. Obviously it will be tough to play tri-series away from home,” Soumya said to the media Friday. “We scored 190 (193) against Sri Lanka recently. We can score 200 runs if we can take runs quickly and if big hitters have some big shots in the end. We will definitely try to score 200-plus innings there,” he added. Bangladesh have not performed well in the latest series’ against the Lankans. The Tigers are particularly weak in the shortest format of the game. It will be a tough challenge for Bangladesh as both Sri Lanka and India are strong T20I opponents. Soumya admitted that the opposition sides are strong but believes Bangladesh need to focus on performing well and executing plans out there on the field. “If we consider our ranking in T20Is then we will be in the backfoot before even the start of the series. I believe whoever plays well in the field, will win eventually. If we can play according to our plans and ability then we can win. So we are focusing on our gameplan and executing our plan, rather than the strong opponents,” he explained.

Soumya has not performed well in the last year or so. As a result, he was dropped from the ODI and Test team recently. However, his T20I form is looking good and the left-hander said he is eager to perform well in the upcoming series. “Whenever I enter the field I always try to perform well. There are four matches to be played there. I am concentrating on the first match. Then I will focus match by match. I will try to prove myself in the tournament,” said Soumya. “I am not thinking about my return to Tests and ODIs at the moment through the Nidahas series. As I am in the T20I squad and the tournament will be in the T20I format, I am focusing on this format and this tournament only. “As I have the ability to bowl, I think I may get the chance to bowl there. I will try to help my team with bowling as well. If my captain and coach believe in me, I can be useful with my bowling for the team. Then I will try my best,” he added. Bangladesh will depart Sunday for Sri Lanka. The Tigers will play their first match against India Thursday.
