Chief national selector Minhajul justifies Imrul inclusion

Update : 26 Feb 2018, 07:39 PM
The inclusion of top-order batsman Imrul Kayes in the 16-member Bangladesh squad for the Nidahas T20I tri-nation series in Sri Lanka next month has raised questions. Imrul, who last played for the Tigers in the shortest format of the game in October last year, has been picked for his ability to play the new ball, said chief national selector Minhajul Abedin Nannu. "There are a few decisions which were made by the management based on some facts. We thought he is able to play the fast ball well and brings in experience in the batting line-up. The wicket in Colombo will be a true wicket and Imrul has the opportunity to play well there," said Minhajul following the declaration of the Bangladesh squad at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka Monday.

The chief selector’s explanation regarding Imrul's inclusion however, was not received well as it did not comply with the recent stats. The left-hander in his 13 T20I innings for Bangladesh has scored only 119 runs at an average of just 9.15. Bangladesh are set to travel to Sri Lanka Sunday as the tournament involving India and the host nation is set to start next Tuesday. All the matches will be held in Colombo's R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium, with the final set to be played on March 18.
