Prime Bank school cricket begins Wednesday
Prime Bank School Cricket Season 2017-18 is all set to start Wednesday with the participation of 558 schools and over 11,000 young cricketers from across the country. BCB director and age-level committee chairman Tanjil Chowdhury highlighted different aspects of the tournament in a press conference at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka Tuesday. BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury was also present in the presser along with other dignitaries. "Prime Bank has been working with us for the last three years in order to bring back the glory days of school cricket. We realise every year that more and more young cricketers are getting attracted to this tournament. Most of the cricketers in U-15 and U-17 have emerged from school cricket,” said Tanjil to the media. A total of 14 cricketers from the school cricket season 2016-17 got opportunity in the Bangladesh U-15 team while the U-17 side discovered 15 players from the school cricket pool. A total of 558 schools will participate in the district phase of the competition. Dhaka has the most participants with 130 schools while Chittagong has 92, Khulna 84 and Rajshahi and Rangpur have 68 each. The district champions will compete in the division phase. The seven divisional champions will then participate in the national phase, which also includes the champion from Dhaka Metropolis. A total of 979 matches will be played in the one-day format. "Prime Bank always played a role in developing cricket in the country. We have been sponsoring school cricket for the last three years. We have taken initiatives to attract cricketers from the leading schools in Dhaka, Chittagong and other divisions," informed Prime Bank managing director Rahel Ahmed.
