The uncapped Nayeem Hasan was recently included in the Bangladesh squad for the first of two Test matches against Sri Lanka, starting Wednesday in the port city's Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Cricket Stadium.
And ahead of the first Test, Nayeem spoke with the media Monday during training. Here are the excerpts:
From U-19s to Test team
It has been a great experience. After the U-19 match I was informed that I got a Test call-up.
Feelings after getting called up
It was great. But obviously I was upset as well as we lost the quarter-final against India (in the U-19 World Cup).
Was call-up expected?
I thought I would try to get the chance in the national team after U-19 World Cup. Just the way Mehedi Hasan Miraz bhai got his chance. But I did not expect that the chance will come so fast.
I will try to perform well and bowl in good and consistent spots if I get chance. Test cricket is game of patience.
Chance to debut at home gorund
I have made debut in National Cricket League, Bangladesh Cricket League, Bangladesh Premier League in this ground. I will try to give my 100% if I get the chance. I don’t know how the wicket will behave. But I will try to bowl with variation and according to my strength.
You started out as a pacer, now you are a spinner…
I started as a pacer. But my height was not that much. So seniors advised me to become a spinner in the Academy. Coach also advised me to become spinner.
Experience of bowling with Abdur Razzak and Miraz…
Obviously good. They are vastly experienced. There is lot to learn from them.
I have good bounce in my bowling. Wickets in Bangladesh also get good turn. So I will try to bowl according to wicket.
Inspiration in cricket
My father, mother and brother. I also followed Shane Watson in my early days. And in Bangladesh, Shakib [al Hasan] bhai and Tamim [Iqbal] bhai are my inspiration.
