100 cricketers picked in DPL players’ draft
A total of 100 cricketers were picked in the Players’ Draft of the Dhaka Premier League 2018, held in Dhaka Saturday. The 12 clubs of the premier 50-over cricket tournament of the country participated in the draft and formed their respective squads for the competition, set to start on February 5. Selection of the 12 icon cricketers was the main attraction of the event. However, three of the clubs – Lt. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Limited, Brothers Union and newly promoted side Agrani Bank Cricket Club - did not pick any icon cricketer for the season. This paved the way for three other clubs to grab an extra icon player for the season. Prime Bank Cricket Club, Abahani Limited and Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club bagged two icons each. Prime Bank roped in Mahmudullah and Rubel Hossain while defending champion Abahani picked Nasir Hossain and Mehedi Hasan Miraz. Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club grabbed Liton Das and Mustafizur Rahman. Newly promoted from the Dhaka First Division Cricket League, Shinepukur Cricket Club picked Mashrafe bin Mortaza but it is rumoured that the club might let go the veteran pacer to Abahani, backed by the clause where a club can exchange or give a player to another club upon mutual understanding. Gazi Group Cricketers bagged Imrul Kayes as the icon of the side while Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited recruited Shakib al Hasan. Legends of Rupganj have Mushfiqur Rahim as the icon while Kalabagan Krira Chakra picked Tamim Iqbal from the draft.

Khelaghar Samaj Kalyan Samity picked Anamul Haque. Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis chairman Kazi Inam Ahmed following a successful draft informed that the committee’s primary ambition is to ensure the club clears 50% payment of the players and also standard of umpiring in the tournament. The clubs have been given deadline to clear 50% players’ remuneration by January 30. The CCDM boss believes the grading of players for the draft was done successfully by the selectors. “It was becoming tough for some Dhaka League clubs to cope with the expenses. The selectors did the grading after speaking to the players. We believe the players are happy about the draft,” said Inam to the media. Regarding the advance payment of the players, Inam said, “The clubs had to clear 50% payment of the players they had retained and all of them met the deadline. I would like to thank the clubs for that and expect similar support in the coming days.” Dhaka Premier League has been hit with controversies over below standard umpiring in the recent past. The CCDM does not plan to involve any foreign umpire in the tournament but want to improve the standard of the local umpires.

“We all want to see good umpiring. Last year cameras were placed on the field both by a few clubs and the board and it will be the same this season too. There were not many complaints with the umpires last season and I hope it will remain the same this year too. I already spoke to the umpire’s committee chairman and vice chairman and they have assured me of good umpiring. The clubs are expecting a composed and competitive season,” Inam concluded.
