The BCB disciplinary committee has proposed central contract suspension, six-month ban from domestic cricket and Tk20 lakh fine for Bangladesh batsman Sabbir Rahman. The BCB president Nazmul Hasan announced the proposal of the disciplinary committee following a meeting at his corporate office in Dhaka Monday.
The right-handed batsman found himself in hot water after he was accused and later found guilty of assaulting a spectator and threatening the match officials during the sixth and final round of the 17th National Cricket League last month.
On the other hand, Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal is in line to be fined Tk5 lakh and warned for publicly criticising the outfield of Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium during the BPL 2017. Tamim, who captained Comilla Victorians to the Qualifiers of the T20 tournament, blasted the poor Mirpur outfield, which offended the BCB.
The punishments for the two cricketers have been proposed to the board by the disciplinary committee and are likely to be implemented soon. The board holds the authority to increase the punishments.
Sabbir, playing for Rajshahi, was facing Dhaka Metropolis at Shaheed Kamruzzaman Stadium in Rajshahi where the incidents took place. The match referee in the game, Showkatur Rahman submitted a report on the incident to the BCB’s tournament committee which was later forwarded to the disciplinary committee. Sabbir was called for a hearing by the committee, who had the option of directly implementing the punishments, given that the offence was a Level 4 one in accordance with the BCB by-laws.
The punishment proposed for Sabbir will see him lose almost Tk80 lakh combined. The new BCB central contract is effective from Monday though it has not been penned by any of the cricketers as of Monday. It is understood that the board had initially planned to sign 11 cricketers in the central contract, including Sabbir.
The Bangladesh batsman will lose roughly Tk30 lakh for not having a central contract while the six-month ban in domestic cricket will deny him participation in the Dhaka Premier League – the premier 50-over cricket tournament of the country - scheduled to begin later this month. Sabbir will lose some Tk30 lakh if he misses out on the DPL.
Meanwhile in Tamim’s case, BCB boss Nazmul informed that the board was severely offended by the cricketer’s comments, which can or could have harmed Bangladesh cricket.
The BCB supremo Nazmul explaining why other cricketers were not taken to task for disciplinary breach for publicly complaining the below-par set-up in Mirpur during the BPL said, “We all know that the Mirpur outfield had received two demerit points during the Australia Test match series last year. Any field with four demerit points loses international status and we cannot afford for that to happen. Tamim’s comments can or could have severely harmed our cricket.”
