All-round performance from Shahid Afridi sealed Dhaka Dynamites’ crushing eight-wicket win over Sylhet Sixers during their BPL 2017 match at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka Saturday.
Chasing only 102 for victory, Dhaka batsmen did not waste any time and reached their target in just 7.5 overs.
Afridi started the innings with regular opener Evin Lewis of the West Indies. And the two openers ran riot against Syleht bowlers, crossing the 50-run mark in just 23 deliveries.
“Boom Boom” Afridi scored 37 off 17 balls with 34 of those runs coming in fours and sixes.
England’s Tim Bresnan took back-to-back wickets in the first and second ball of the fifth over. But Dhaka captain Shakib al Hasan and Lewis ensured a commanding win at the end.
Lewis remained unbeaten on 44 off 18 deliveries with two boundaries and five sixers while Shakib was not out on 18.
Earlier, Dhaka won the toss and elected to field. Dhaka picked Afridi in the playing XI in place of Sri Lanka legend Kumar Sangakkara.
From the very beginning, Sylhet lost regular wickets and at one stage, were in danger of being all out for 60-odd as their ninth wicket fell with the scoreboard reading 53. But all-rounder Abul Hasan and No 11 batsman Taijul Islam added 48 for the 10th wicket and Sylhet finished their innings at only 101, losing nine wickets in their allotted 20 overs.
Afridi was the main destroyer with the ball for Dhaka as the leg-spinner notched four wickets conceding just 12 runs. West Indies’ Sunil Narine took three wickets while seamer Abu Haider bagged two for Dhaka.
Afridi was adjudged man of the match.
106/2 in 7.5 overs (Lewis 44*, Afridi 37) beat Sylhet Sixers
101/9 (Abul 30*, Afridi 4/12) by eight wickets
WHAT THEY SAID
Shakib al Hasan, Dhaka Dynamites captain
As a captain I am more pleased with the bowling line-up as we have Shahid Afridi, Sunil Narine, myself and even Abu Haider in our side. I think bowling is our biggest strength. We are lucky that we have such world-class bowling line-up. Our first target was to win the match and in the end we chased down quickly and we are happy for that. Afridi performed brilliantly. That’s why he had been chosen because he is a match-winner. I hope he can continue his good form. And as a team we believe we can turn around from bad situation as we have performers like Afridi in the team.
Nasir Hossian, Sylhet Sixers captain
Our start in batting was poor. Good start was important for us. Probably it’s one of the reasons why we scored a low total in this match. Andre Fletcher is suffering from a slight hamstring injury. So we given him a rest and hopefully he will play the next game. We thought the wicket will be flat. While batting, our batsmen were in a rush to score and lost their wickets. Two losses in the last two matches has obviously hurt our confidence slightly. But we have a good team and we are hoping to bounce back in the next game.
