DPL season 2016-17: Gazi Group stunned as unbeaten run ends
Kalabagan Krira Chakra, one of the struggling sides in the competition, caused the biggest upset of the season defeating league leader Gazi Group Cricketers in the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League 2016-17 season on Thursday. With their third win in 10 matches this year, Kalabagan took yet another step towards safety and avoiding the relegation league while for Gazi, the defeat was their first of the season. Boosted by Junaid Siddique’s century, Brothers Union defeated Mohammedan Sporting Club while Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club beat Prime Bank Cricket Club to register their sixth win of the season and keep their hope alive of progressing to the Super League. Gazi v Kalabagan, Fatullah Table-topper Gazi lost to relegation contender Kalabagan by 127 runs. The side were unbeaten in nine previous matches prior to their defeat against Kalabagan in round 10. The loss was so dramatic that Gazi were all out for only 95 in 32.5 overs. Chasing 223, only three Gazi batsmen reached double figures with Nadif Chowdhury scoring the highest 45. Sanjit Saha and Saad Nasim picked up three wickets each while Tushar Imran and Abul Hasan bagged two apiece. Earlier, Kalabagan were asked to bat first and riding on Tasamul Haque’s 102, they posted 222 losing nine wickets in 50 overs. Parvez Rasool took four wickets for Gazi. They defeated Mohammedan by 129 runs. Invited to take first guard, courtesy Junaid’s 110 and Alok Kapali’s 51, Brothers posted 276 on the board losing eight wickets in 49 overs. Tajiul Islam, Enamul Haque Jr and Sajedul Islam picked up two wickets each for Mohammedan. In reply, Mohammedan managed 147 before losing all of their wickets in 35.4 overs. Iftekhar took four wickets in 5.4 overs conceding 19 runs. Saykat Ali topped Mohammedan's innings with 70 while only two other batsman made double figures. Jamal v Prime, BKSP 4 Jamal picking up their sixth win of the season defeating Prime by two wickets. With a game to spare in the first phase of the league, Jamal are currently fifth with the top six teams qualifying for the Super League. Asked to bat first, Prime made 270 for the loss of nine wickets in 50 overs, thanks to Mehedi Maruf’s 61 and Abhimanyu’s Easwaran’s 54. Shahadat Hossain bagged two wickets. Chasing the target, Jamal reached their target with only a ball to spare. Sohag Gazi struck a 62-ball 54 for Jamal with four boundaries and three over-boundaries. Ariful Haque picked up four wickets for Prime but the effort went in vain.
