Bangladesh start well, despite Tamim's brain freeze

Update : 08 Mar 2017, 11:02 PM
Tamim's opening partner, Soumya Sarkar, was unbeaten on 66, alongside skipper Mushfiqur Rahim, who was undefeated on one. Soumya’s unbeaten innings was constructed with seven boundaries and a six. Replying to Sri Lanka’s 494 in the first essay, Bangladesh opening pair Tamim and Soumya scripted a solid and composed start, putting on 118 runs before the former lost his wicket in a strange fashion. Both the openers made fifties and played confidently until Tamim got out in the 36th over. Tamim, who was batting beautifully till then, tried to play a leg-glance off the bowling of Lakshan Sandakan, but was unable to connect the ball as wicket-keeper Niroshan Dickwella appealed for a catch. In the meantime, Tamim thought the keeper missed the ball and started running. Dickwella quickly dislodged the bails to dismiss the left-handed batsman. The southpaw made 57 from 112 balls with half a dozen boundaries. Tamim and Soumya’s 118-run opening stand is the highest for Bangladesh against Sri Lanka. The previous highest opening partnership was 94, added by Jahurul Islam and Tamim in Colombo in March, 2013. Later, No 3 batsman Mominul Haque was dismissed for seven in the 41st over when he was trapped in front by off-spinner Dilruwan Perera. Earlier, Sri Lanka’s overnight batsmen Kusal Mendis and Dickwella started the day’s play with a lot of aggression. Dickwella smashed a six in the very first over of the day against Subashish Roy. Kusal Mendis sweeps on way to his first innings 194 AFPMendis, meanwhile, rode his luck in the 95th over when he skied a Subashish delivery. The right-arm pacer though was unlucky again as Mustafizur Rahman, stationed at deep fine leg, took the catch but stepped on the ropes after being unable to keep his balance. Mendis however, was finally dismissed on 194 off Mehedi Hasan Miraz’s bowling in the 104th over. The right-hander tried to hit a six to reach his maiden double hundred but was unable to clear the boundary as Tamim took a brilliant catch at long on. Tamim caught it cleanly but lost his balance. He then tossed the ball up, crossed the boundary before returning to the field to complete the catch. Mendis' brilliant innings ended with 19 boundaries and four over boundaries. Dickwella, on the other hand, scored a brisk 76-ball 75, featuring seven boundaries and a sixer. Miraz was the most successful bowler for Bangladesh, bagging four wickets conceding 113 runs. Mustafizur also bowled well throughout the day, taking two wickets for 68 runs. He bowled five overs in his first spell and gave away only five runs. The Satkhira lad exhibited good rhythm, which is a good sign for Bangladesh, as the left-arm paceman recently returned to the Test side after a long injury layoff.BRIEF SCORESri Lanka 494 in 129.1 overs (Mendis 194, Gunaratne 85, Miraz 4/113) lead Bangladesh 133/2 in 46 overs (Soumya 66*, Tamim 57, Perera 1/32) by 361 runs
