Under fire Mushfiq bats for the team

Update : 12 Feb 2017, 07:57 PM
His leadership quality on and off the field, and his below-par display behind the stumps in this very game, put Mushfiq in the line of fire. Many are of the opinion that the 29-year old should be relieved from captaincy and keeping in order to put more concentration on his batting. However, putting aside all the pressure, Mushfiq led from the front with the willow to put his side in a good position. India might have posted a mammoth 687 runs for six wickets declared in the first innings but Mushfiq's fifth hundred went a long way in bringing Bangladesh back into the game. The century saw Mushfiq emerge as the third Bangladeshi, after opening batsman Tamim Iqbal, who has done it twice, and Mominul Haque, to score tons in back-to-back matches. Prior to the Hyderabad Test at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Mushfiq had stated his aim of leaving a mark. The Bangladesh team are yet to meet the ambition heading into the fifth and final day's play on Monday but for Mushfiq, the job is already done. His crucial 127-run knock guided the Tigers to 388 in the first innings. Later, India batted out 29 overs in the second innings, adding 159 for four before declaring to set the Tigers a 459-run target in a minimum of 135 overs. Going into day three, Mushfiq's intention was clear as he put together an important 107-run partnership with Shakib al Hasan for the fifth wicket. At stumps last Saturday, Bangladesh were batting on 322 for six with Mushfiq unbeaten on 81, along with Mehedi Hasan Miraz, who was not out on 51. Resuming his innings on day four, Mushfiq had the responsibility of scoring a substantial knock and he did just that. Mushfiq became the third Bangladeshi to score tons in back-to-back Test matches AFPThe right-handed middle-order batsman lost his partner Miraz within the first over of the day and very soon, the next batsman, Taijul Islam, made his way to the dressing room. But Mushfiq held onto his nerve, and understood his job well. He soon changed his gear and started attacking the Indian bowlers as he hammered a six and a four to reach his century. In the process, he surpassed Shakib and Mominul, who have four tons each. Opener Tamim at the summit with eight hundreds, followed by Mohammad Ashraful who has six. Interestingly, Mushfiq has scored the centuries in five different countries. The first one came against India in Chittagong in 2010, followed by his double century against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka. The fourth came in the West Indies in 2014 while the latest was scored against India on Sunday. Mushfiq did not stop after reaching his century. At that point, Bangladesh needed another 140 runs to avoid the follow-on and Mushfiq did his best to get his side as close as possible to the target. And so, yet another time Mushfiq showed his worth with the bat. This effort will surely overshadow his lapses as captain and wicket-keeper. The last time Mushfiq made the BCB think of replacing him as Test captain was right after the England series at home in October last year. With fresh concerns rising ahead of the tour of Sri Lanka at the end of this month, it will not be long for the board to perhaps think about bringing someone else as Test skipper. Mushfiq though won't mind as he will continue to contribute with the bat.
