Azmir set the record in the ongoing 2016-17 First Division cricket league for Agrani Bank Cricket Club against Udayachal Cub Tuesday.
Earlier in 2000, Pakistan cricketer Ziaur Rahman, playing for Abahani Limited, smashed an undefeated 201-run knock against Dhanmondi Club. Azmir surpassed the previous best, scoring 222 runs.
The dead-rubber First Division Super League game suddenly turned into the talk of the town after Azmir smashed 222 off 168 balls, featuring 16 sixes and 14 fours at the BKSP-4 ground.
Agrani Bank went on to post a huge total of 343/5 in 50 overs and eventually won the game by 186 runs after Udayachal ended their chase on 197/6 in 50 overs. Imranuzzaman struck a hundred for the losing side.
The 20-year old Azmir, who was unaware of the unique record of smashing a double hundred in 50-over First Division cricket in Bangladesh, informed that he follows the batting of Tigers Test captain Mushfiqur Rahim and dreams of playing for the national team in future.
Azmir, who hails from the capital city, is yet to make his first-class debut.
“To be honest, I did not know about the record that I am the first Bangladesh batsman to smash a double hundred in the history of 50-over First Division cricket in Bangladesh. It really feels good as I had a tough time this season with the bat. I would like to thank my coach Anwar Hossain Chowdhury and I dream to play for the national team. My favourite batsman is Mushfiq bhai,” Azmir told Dhaka Tribune.
