BPL 4 team review: Dhaka justify favourites tag

Update : 11 Dec 2016, 01:01 AM
Dhaka Dynamites produced clinical performances throughout the Bangladesh Premier League Twenty20 2016-17 season and emerged as the champions by defeating Rajshahi Kings in the final in Mirpur’s Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium last Friday. Pressure was right there from the beginning of the tournament for Dhaka as they were considered the main contenders for the title. The capital city outfit eventually held their nerves and played consistent cricket to clinch the title in some style. One of the main challenges for Dhaka was to maintain their consistent performance as there were many stars in the team. But credit goes to captain Shakib al Hasan and coach Khaled Mahmud as they managed the team quite professionally to achieve success. Only four overseas players were allowed to play and the Dhaka squad had big names like Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Dwayne Bravo, Ravi Bopara, Seekkuge Prasanna, Andre Russell (who joined later in the tournament) and Evin Lewis, among others. Sometimes too many in-form players or star cricketers can cause selection dilemma and distract the team from the goal of becoming champions. It was a challenge for the team management to find the right combination and rotate the players to taste success. But Dhaka managed it professionally and achieved their desired result. For example, it was a tough call to drop Sri Lankan legendary batsman Jayawardene for a string of matches. Jayawardene could play only two matches due to team combination. Jayawardene instead helped the team with his experience and knowledge and in the end Dhaka benefited a lot. Dhaka ended the tournament in grand fashion, thumping an in-form Rajshahi side in the grand finale DHAKA TRIBUNEDhaka played 14 matches in BPL 4 and lost only four. Batsmen and bowlers performed pretty consistently in the entire tournament to clinch the title. Shakib was impressive with his captaincy and youngsters like Mosaddek Hossain and Abu Jayed Rahi played well. In-form paceman Mohammad Shahid was unfortunate to be ruled out during the middle stages of the tournament due to injury. But Jayed bowled admirably, making up hor Shahid's absence. Things got heated up in the middle in the first qualifier against Khulna Titans as Shakib and Jayed got involved in a bust-up with on-field umpire Khalid Mahmood. Later, Shakib was fined 20 percent of his match fee. That was probably the lowest point for Dhaka in the tournament. But ultimately, they were dominant with both bat and ball in the majority of the matches and ended the tournament in grand fashion. Dhaka's Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara shone with the willow and behind the stumps DHAKA TRIBUNELocal playersOpening batsman Mehedi Maruf played impressively throughout the tournament scoring 347 runs in 14 innings with a highest score of 75 not out. Middle-order batter Mosaddek was also in form, making 304 runs in 13 innings. Shakib scored 226 runs in 13 innings and took 13 wickets. Probably a bit more was expected from Shakib as he is one of the best all-rounders in the world but in the end the title win will satisfy the fans. Shahid was in superb form bagging 15 wickets in eight innings before being injured. All-rounder Nasir Hossain was disappointing with the bat as he scored only 195 runs in 10 innings.Foreign players Dhaka's Dwayne Bravo ended the tournament as the leading wicket-taker DHAKA TRIBUNELankan great Sangakkara was solid as usual with the willow and also performed well behind the stumps. Windies all-rounder Bravo was magnificent with his death-over bowling and finished as the highest wicket taker of the tournament with 21 wickets. Another all-rounder Russel also played his part and struck a vital 46-run knock against Khulna in the first qualifier. West Indian Lewis played only three matches but played two good innings and ended with 131 runs.SquadLocal playersAlauddin Babu (all-rounder), Irfan Sukkur (wicket-keeper), Mehedi Maruf (batsman), Mohammad Shahid (bowler), Mosaddek Hossain (all-rounder), Nasir Hossain (all-rounder), Shakib al Hasan (all-rounder), Sohrawardi Shuvo (bowler), Sanjamul Islam (all-rounder), Tanvir Haider (all-rounder) and Abu Jayed (bowler).Foreign playersRavi Bopara (England/all-rounder), Dwayne Bravo (West Indies/all-rounder), Mahela Jayawardene (Sri Lanka/batsman), Evin Lewis (West Indies/batsman), Wayne Parnell (South Africa/all-rounder), Seekkuge Prasanna (Sri Lanka/bowler), Andre Russell (West Indies/all-rounder), Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka/batsman) and Usama Mir (Pakistan/bowler).Last 14 Match: WLWWWLLWWWWLWWBPL 4 StatisticsMost runs
