Dominant Comilla thrash Rajshahi
Rajshahi Kings made life difficult for themselves to qualify for the playoffs when they were beaten comprehensively by eight wickets by holders Comilla Victorians in their Bangladesh Premier League 2016-17 season match at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Wednesday. Pakistan batsman Ahmed Shehzad blasted a 45-ball 46, featuring four fours and a six, while West Indies batsman Marlon Samuels remained unbeaten on a 41-ball 55, studded with four sixes and a couple of boundaries, as Comilla, chasing Rajshahi's modest 124/7 reached their destination with eight balls to spare. The holders registered only their third win in 10 games while Rajshahi suffered their fifth defeat in the same number of matches as Comilla. In order to harbour any expectations of making it into the last four, Rajshahi will have to win their remaining two games and hope other results go their way. In pursuit of 125, Comilla lost opening batsman Imrul Kayes (nine), who was dismissed by Rajshahi spinner Mehedi Hasan Miraz. However, Shehzad and Samuels ensured there would be no worries in their chase as the second wicket partnership added 90 runs. The Rajshahi bowlers looked helpless in the face of some controlled batting by the Comilla batsmen. Earlier, Rajshahi made a flying start after electing to bat first. But following the departure of Mominul Haque (20) and Nurul Hasan (17), Rajshahi somewhat lost their way. Sabbir Rahman (eight), Samit Patel (four) and Miraz (seven) were all dismissed cheaply, making things difficult for the batting side. However, former New Zealand all-rounder James Franklin, playing his maiden BPL 4 match, struck a blistering unbeaten 44-run knock off just 31 balls. The tall left-hander struck 24 runs in the last over of the innings, bowled by pacer Shahadat Hossain, where he smashed three sixes and a four to eventually help his side post a decent total on the board.
