Bengal Chess Club Limited emerged as the unbeaten champion in the seventh edition of the Premier Division Chess League after outplaying Fire Service and Civil Defense Sports Club by 3.5-0.5 points in the 11th and final round at National Sports Council Lounge in Dhaka Tuesday.
The champion team comprised Bangladesh Grandmaster Niaz Murshed, Georgian GMs Mikheil Mchedlishvili and Paichadze Luka and Women’s International Master Shamima Akter Liza. They earned a total of 19 points from 11 matches. Only Niaz drew his final round game while the others won their respective games.
After Bengal Group bought the ownership of the Masud Sporting and Chess Club before the tournament, Bengal Chess Club Ltd finished the competition one point ahead of big-budget Saif Sporting Club, who comfortably beat Sultana Kamal Memorial Library 4-0 in their last match.
It was sixth title out of seven for south Asia's first GM Niaz and the only time he missed out on the title was during the fourth edition in 2014 while playing for Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited. He played for Saif Sporting Club last season.
