The 43rd edition of the National “A” Chess Championship, featuring three Grandmasters, two International Masters and one Women’s IM, will get underway at the Chess Federation hall-room of National Sports Council’s old building Tuesday afternoon.
WIM Shamima Akter Liza will be the first woman to take part in the top-tier championship in 16 years. Rani Hamid, who is also a WIM, was the last female to partake in the top tier in 2001.
Bangladesh's two other GMs - Niaz Morshed and Rifat bin Sattar - will not be playing in the country's top-tier chess tournament due to personal reasons. A total of 14 players, including 11 players who came through the National B Championship, will be taking part in the event which will be held in accordance with the round-robin league system.
Two GMs - defending champion Enamul Hossain Razib and Abdullah al Rakib - will face each other n the inaugural day while another GM Ziaur Rahman begins his campaign with the match against Fide Master Mahfuz.
A press conference was held in the capital Monday where federation general secretary Syed Shahab Uddin Shamim informed that the top performers from the event will be considered for the national team for next year’s Chess Olympiad. Meanwhile, the champion will get Tk60,000, runners-up side 40,000 and third-place finisher 25,000.
