Gold Coast Commonwealth Games: Weightlifter Mabia registers personal best
Young Bangladesh weightlifter Mabia Aktar Simanta recorded the personal best of her career when she lifted a total of 180kgs in the women's 63kg weight category event on the third day of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia Saturday. Mabia lifted 78kg in the snatch and 102kg in the clean and jerk to be placed sixth out of a total of 13 participants at the Carrara Sports Arena and in the process, she finished above the weightlifters from Malta, Nauru, Wales, Uganda, Kenya and Australia. Indian weightlifter Vandna Gupta lifted the same total to be ranked fifth. Mabia's previous personal record was 179kg which she lifted during the Islamic Solidarity Games in Azerbaijan last year. The 18-year old earlier lifted 176kg in the Commonwealth Championship in India in 2015.

In swimming, Bangladesh's Nazma Khatun took the pool in the women's 50m butterfly event where she was placed 28th out of 29 participants in heat one with a timing of 32.96s. Meanwhile, Bangladesh shooters and athletes will begin their campaign Sunday when Abdullah Hel Baki and Rabbi Hasan Munna compete in the men's 10m air-rifle qualification round at Belmont Shooting Centre. The country's fastest man and woman Mesbah Ahmed and Shirin Akter will compete in heat six and one of the 100m sprint at Carrara Stadium track.
