Bangladesh's fastest man and woman Mezbah Ahmed and Shirin Akter are the final inclusions in the Bangladesh contingent for the Rio Olympics that will be held next month.
Both Mezbah and Shirin received the confirmation for the wild card entry from athletics after the International Olympic Committee issued it to them. They will participate in the 100m sprint events in Rio.
“There was some tension earlier because I always had a dream to participate in Olympics and it would be hard to accept not to get the wild-card after becoming fastest man four times. Now I feel relaxed,” said Mezbah after getting the confirmation.
“The target will be to break my personal best. I clocked 10.72s in the last SA Games and if I can finish 100m in 10.72 then I will be happy,” he added.
On the other hand Shirin is expecting to give her best shot after getting the wild card entry for Rio.
“I have to score a better timing in the Olympics. Maybe we are not giving enough labour and can't also qualify for Olympics directly as well. But it is proud moment for me to represent the country at any way. I will give my best,” she said.
With the addition of Mezbah and Shirin, Bangladesh now have a total of seven athletes in their contingent but only golfer Siddikur Rahman has qualified to the Olympics directly.
The other members of the Bangladesh contingent are swimmers Mahfizur Rahman Sagor, Sonia Akhtar Tumpa, shooter Abdullah Hel Baki and archer Shyamoli Roy.
Mezbah and Shirin became the country's fastest man and women respectively after emerging as champions in the National Athletics Championship in May last year.
