All eyes were on young batter Mahmudul Hasan Joy and medium-pacer Rejaur Rahman Raja, the two new inclusions, when Bangladesh Test squad took to the nets in Chittagong's Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium Wednesday.

Hosts Bangladesh and Pakistan reached the post city Tuesday and attended their respective first practice sessions before the first Test of the series starting Friday at ZACS.

Top-order batter Mahmudul, top-scorer for Bangladesh in their U-19 World Cup 2020 winning campaign, came up with notable performances in the domestic circuit and when given opportunity in the Bangladesh A team.

Backed by consecutive centuries for Chittagong Division in the just concluded National Cricket League, first-class competition, Mahmudul came into the radar of the national selection panel in the absence of prominent opener Tamim Iqbal and all-rounder Shakib al Hasan, both dealing with injuries.

In case Bangladesh team management decides to play an extra batter in place of the unavailable Shakib, Mahmudul will be in the running for the place in the middle-order along with Yasir Ali Chowdhury.

Yasir has been with the Bangladesh national setup, both in white- and red-ball formats, for more than a year now but is still looking for the golden opportunity to feature for the country in the international stage.

One will have to wait till Friday to see whether Mahmudul’s luck favors and gets him Test debut in his maiden call-up in the national dressing room.

But 21-year old Mahmudul is more than delighted at just being able to be around the national setup for the time.

“It is not possible to express my feelings at the moment. Everyone dreams of becoming part of the Test team and represent the country. I am very happy to get the call in the Test squad,” said Mahmudul to the media Wednesday.

“I played a few good innings in the National League this season. I am quite confident. Before that I played well for HP [BCB High Performance team] and A team. I think I am ready to perform in the matches ahead,” he added.

Meanwhile, for Reajur the story has been different.

The right-arm pacer first emerged around the national Test setup as a net bowler.

Before that he got himself into the professional cricket circuit through a talent-hunt program in 2016.

The 22-year old then went on to play the Dhaka leagues and eventually got selected for first-class cricket for Sylhet Division.

His performance in three rounds of the just concluded NCL matches - 12 wickets - caught the eye of the national selectors and with the dressing room dealing with injuries of pacers Taskin Ahmed and Shariful Islam it was easy for Reajur, who was inspired to play cricket through tape tennis tournament, to get the national call.

“Tape tennis cricket had inspired me to play the game. There was a tournament with cricket ball in my area [in Sylhet]. I played in that tournament. Following that many had advised me to practice with cricket ball. I had listened and soon realized I can achieve something in cricket,” informed Reajur.

Since his debut in the 2019 NCL, Reajur has played 10 first-class games, three List A matches and 16 T20s.

“I enjoy playing longer version cricket. You get to bowl a few spells in four-day games. I feel that I am able to bowl constantly maintaining line and length,” said Reajur.

“I can make the ball move and bowl for long periods in the same rhythm. I think my pace increases a bit by the end of the day compared to the start of the day,” he added.
