Bangladesh spinners will face a stiff challenge restricting the WI power hitters on relatively shorter boundaries at Sharjah

Shorter boundaries at Sharjah Cricket Stadium could be a vital factor for Bangladesh when they face the West Indies in their third game of the Super 12 stage Friday.

Both the teams are in a similar position after their two games as one more loss will knock them out of the T20 World Cup.

The Tigers will have to be wary of the Windies power hitters in Evin Lewis, Chris Gayle and Kieron Pollard, among others.

Bangladesh spinners will face a stiff challenge to restrict them on relatively shorter boundaries at Sharjah stadium.

The West Indies camp are not focusing on the shorter boundaries, rather getting back on track in terms of batting as the Windies batters were out of touch in their first two games, particularly in the opening match where they were bundled out for just 55 runs.

“I think Bangladesh, after losing two games, they're in the situation with us as well. So I think it's going to be a good challenge for us. We need to get that victory,” said Nicholas Pooran during the pre-match press conference Thursday.

“And being in Sharjah as well - we know Bangladesh have a lot of spinners. It's definitely going to be a good challenge for us as well.

“I definitely think it's a good opportunity for us to bounce back. We're not sure how Sharjah is going to play. But our focus is not on the small boundaries, to be honest. We just want to execute our skills. And once we can do that, then the results can take care of itself,” he added.

The two-time winners and reigning champions West Indies, who won the trophy in 2012 and in 2016, suffered heavy defeats to England and South Africa in their first two matches in Group 1.

And Bangladesh will be looking to neutralize their batsman for the third time in a row and knock them out of the T20 World Cup.

Pooran has played two seasons in the Bangladesh Premier League and the left-handed batsman has fond memories in Bangladesh.

“I spent a lot of time in Bangladesh as well. Not only me, but a lot of the other guys as well. We have good friendships. We make good friendships with the guys. We get to understand them. We get to learn from them as well especially under different conditions. So going into that game actually knowing what these guys do, are very familiar with it, that helps us a lot as batsmen and as bowlers as well,” Pooran concluded.

Bangladesh have a good record against the West Indies in shorter formats in recent years but this Windies team in the ongoing T20 World Cup have a different squad filled with world class players.

Since Bangladesh team are underperforming and not playing their best cricket so far, it will be a huge task for the Tigers to overcome the Windies challenge.
