Mushfiq said those critiquing Bangladesh cricket team should first see their own faces in the mirror

Mushfiqur Rahim has come hard on the critics of the Bangladesh team.

The veteran batsman during the press conference at Sharjah Cricket Stadium Sunday said those critiquing Bangladesh cricket team should first see their own faces in the mirror.

Mushfiq attended the media session following the five-wicket defeat in their opening game of the Super 12 stage at the ongoing T20 World Cup.

Mushfiq had boosted Bangladesh to a total of 171 runs with his unbeaten 37-ball 57, but the game slipped away from them to catch drops and unsuccessful bowling changes.

The innings of Mushfiq, however, must have arrived as a relief for one of the most senior players in the Bangladesh set-up.

“Obviously I was not in good touch in the recent five or six games but the way the criticism was going against me it seems that I was not scoring runs for five-six years. But I will try to contribute, be it scoring 10 or 80 runs, behind the success of my team in the coming days,” said Mushfiq to the media on his performance.

“It is normal for them to have different kinds of discussion. You will be praised when you do well and criticized when you don't perform. This is not my first year in the team. I am habituated of such reactions having played for Bangladesh for the last 16 years. I would say the critics without logic should see their own faces in the mirror. They do not play for Bangladesh, we do. We always try to do well. Sometimes we get successful, sometimes we fail,” said the diminutive batsman.

Mushfiq when asked the reason behind the loss against Sri Lanka despite being in a good position in the game hinted the two dropped catches of Charith Asalanka and Bhanuka Rajapaksa by Liton Das as pivotal.

Asalanka and Rajapaksa were the force behind Sri Lanka’s successful chase as the duo posted 86 for the fifth wicket stand.

This however, had come on the back of Asalanka being dropped on 63 by Liton, while Rajapaksa got a life on 14, again by Liton.

Asalanka was unbeaten on 80, snatching victory for Sri Lanka, while Rajapaksa before his dismissal in the 19th over smashed 53 off just 31 balls.

“To be honest there is nothing to blame for as no matter how many runs, we score there will be some small mistakes and also few positive areas. Our mistakes were the two dropped catches of Liton despite the fact that he is a very good fielder and it could have been a different story if it was me as he is a better fielder. At the same time it was in a very crucial stage of the game as the two lefty batters (Asalanka and Rajapaksa) were batting really well,” said the 34-year old cricketer.

“If we could pick those two wickets in that situation the game might have turned in our way. The wicket was good despite a lack of runs in the surface off late. We knew 170 is not a winning score and if we could utilize the opportunity, we could turn the game in our favor. They had a good powerplay although Shakib (al Hasan) gave us the momentum, but the two batsmen changed the game,” he added.
