Bangladesh players and coaching staff huddle up during training in Muscat BCB

Domingo is counting on Bangladesh’s past experience in overcoming tight situations

Bangladesh cricket team in Muscat are under immense pressure.

The side considered as the strongest in Group B of the qualifying round of the T20 World Cup 2021 lost their opening game to Scotland by six runs at Al Amerat Stadium Sunday.

This put Bangladesh in a must-win position in the next two games of the round to move to the main event.

Bangladesh Tuesday will take on hosts Oman who are boosted with confidence not only for getting off to a winning start in the tournament, but also the manner in which they secured victory.

Oman simply demolished a lower-ranked Papua New Guinea to secure a 10-wicket victory chasing 130 runs with 38 balls to spare.

Bangladesh head coach Russell Domingo however, ruled out being worried going into the game against Oman.

The former South African cricketer is counting on Bangladesh’s past experience in overcoming tight situations in tournaments and series'.

“The boys are confident that we can get through. I have great belief in the boys. They have come out on top in some tight games over the last year. The boys are full of belief that we can overcome Oman and PNG, and put ourselves in a position to qualify for the main event,” said Domingo to the media in the Omani capital Monday.

“There’s always massive pressure in World Cups, particularly for a cricket-loving nation like Bangladesh. Every performance is scrutinized, every mistake gets magnified, so players are under pressure. But, that’s why they play for their country. They have to embrace that pressure, and hopefully it brings the best out of the boys,” the Bangladesh coach added.

In the postmortem of Bangladesh’s humiliating defeat against Scotland, the batting approach is being the most discussed, particularly senior members of the side in Shakib al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim and captain Mahmudullah.

Chasing 141, Bangladesh were again let down by the openers – this time Liton Das and Soumya Sarkar.

The onus was on Shakib, Mushfiq and Mahmudullah, but despite the immense experience under their belts, the trio failed to take the team to the destination.

Questions have been raised with regards to their approach - a low strike rate - and perhaps it was Mushfiq’s way of dismissal that had irked the majority.

“You can never say they are liabilities [Shakib, Mahmudullah and Mushfiq]. They are world-class players. They know that maybe they didn’t play at the level that they are used to playing. They are champion cricketers for Bangladesh. I have no reason to question their capabilities. Just a few months ago, Riyad won us games against Australia and New Zealand. He may be a bit rusty having not played a warm-up game. But I can never question their quality. There are big performances around the corner,” Domingo said in defense of his players.

Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hasan has been one of many to come with heavy criticism of the team’s performance.

The BCB chief found it hard to accept the loss, given that he believes the team had a strong preparation building up to the T20 World Cup.

Bangladesh had come to Oman and the UAE pumped with series wins against Zimbabwe, Australia and New Zealand.

Questions were raised however, on the manner of victory, particularly in the series against Australia and New Zealand at home.

When it was expected that playing 10 matches in the two series on sporting wickets would be ideal preparation ahead of the world event, Bangladesh team management instead chose to grab wins taking advantage of slow, low and turning wickets at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

“I am not here to talk about the president [Nazmul]. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I am not criticizing any of my players. I have full faith in them. What’s outside the team, isn’t important for me at the moment. My focus is very much on my team, and making sure we back them 100%,” said Domingo.
